Let's see some pics of your multi carburetor set-ups. Tell us why you run 'em and how they run. Be honest about your experience with tuning and performance. I've always heard that it's easier to run a single 4 bbl and you get the best performance that way to boot. What do you have to say about that?

Not pretty, as daily driver shop truck, carbs untouched for 21 years.

Ford 390, 2 genuine Carter 625 CFM AFB's, solid linkage. Replaced single Carter 625 CFM AFB, which previously replace a Holley.

Tuning: quite a bit, but I had expected that.
Performance: first gear is now useless under WOT unless there is a significant load in the bed ;)
Fuel economy: the single AFB DOUBLED the mileage from the Holley, the dual AFB's increased it another 6 percent.
Impressions: one young whippersnapper (about 40) gave me the ultimate insult (unintentionally) when he asked where I got the fuel injection system for the FE engine! His face turned red when I opened the hood.

May have a picture of '64 GTO tripower somewhere, but performance suffered dramatically versus the original 4-barrel, so don't have the pictures where I look at them often. Mileage was better.

  9. I have a Caddy 390, (I believe you are working on a Caddy 331). I found an OEM 55’ Caddy Eldorado dual quad set up cheap with correct original Rochesters and linkages. They were completely frozen, missing pieces and needed a lot of love and I needed to weld a crack in the manifold, but I rebuilt them and did eventually get them working well. I have been dialing them in over time, and every time I do something they run a little better. Right now they are T&A. They get about the same gas mileage as I did with a really nice OEM Single Rochester on iron intake that I also rebuilt, it doesn’t run as well as the single four barrel, but the fun for me is taking a dead 2X4, brining it back to life and running it on my daily driver. Also, my knowledge and skill is pathetic compared to virtually everyone else here, so if I can do it, chances are a toddler probably can too.

Horne 4x2 setup on the 49 331 caddy in my 40 ford coupe, 4 original chrome stromberg 97's with 41 jets. this thing runs as smooth as a gravy sandwich, Idles at 500 rpms and has great throttle response. I couldn't be happier with it

Man a fre on my 61 corvette. 350 solid cam 4 speed. 4 rochester 2gc's with .049 jets. I screwed around quite a bit to get this to run right but now that it does ,it feels a lot faster to me than the 650 dp holley that I took off from it and I checked the gas mileage once last summer with a mix of freeway, around town and a fair amount of beating on it and got 17 mpg

I posted it wasn't pretty. Drive one daily for 21 years, and see how it looks ;)

Probably out of place with all the pretty pictures being posted, but it does show a bit of reliability, and I am certainly not ashamed of it.

    As to the OP's questions:

IF WE STAY TRADITIONAL - properly selected and tuned dual quads are going to out-perform a single 4-barrel.

On the other hand, if anything goes, then dual quad intake development is pretty much non-existent over the last 50 years, as the demand for single quad intakes by lazy ;) individuals has become the norm. The better airflow of the modern single quad manifold is going to trump the better cylinder average fill density of the traditional dual quad (when compared to the traditional single quad).

If I were 40 years younger, and Man-A-Fre made an intake for a Ford FE, I would love to play with it. In the baja boondocks of the Ozarks, I hadn't seen ANY Man-A-Fre until the last few years.

    Jon.

I just purchased a Offy 3x2 for my Caddy 331. I had planned to be one of the lazy guys and run a single 4 bbl but I saw where Speedway had the Offy on sale at a great price so I sprung for one. I have a few Holley 94's laying around and a couple of Stromberg 97's so I may go for the 3x2 setup. I am not a great engine tuner but hey, I have you guys to help me with that!
FYI I also purchased a large lot of antique/classic auto parts from a defunct museum here in Va. and I have about 40 (yes forty!) new in the box Bendix/Stromberg WW carbs for various applications. I know some people like to tun these too.

Boost referenced 950 Holley double pumpers, tuned on the dyno. Performance is inspiring to say the least.

I have no idea how they run yet (getting there). Why? No one ever asks people to post up their single carb set ups.
