I need help to determine the value of this ol gal. Trying to decide if I should buy it or not. Sometimes you only get one shot when bargaining with a farmer and I don't want to blow it. I want to be able to negotiate right there on the spot. Missing rear axle and drive line. No title. Big tear in the passenger side fender. Flathead 8 is there and complete. Condition unknown. Currently stuck but might free up with a little soaking. No rust through that I could find. Maybe be a little down on the bottom of the running boards.
I tend towards putting them together and making them drivable vs restoring or hot rodding. It's cheaper, I have fun more quickly and I don't have to be as concerned about people touching or scratching. The one thing I insist on is a nice seat. I'd get this reupholstered and running like a sewing machine and enjoy it as is. If course I may fix other things along the way too such as the fender and grille. Someone else's cast-off's could make me a sweet little hauler. Thanks for the replies. It gives me an idea of how I should negotiate.
Is this the big truck or the pickup with a flatbed on it? If a pickup, the frame and cab with the fenders are worth $1000- $1500. Looks like a major job getting it loaded onto a trailer or rollback and then offloading it.
It's actually fairly easy. Gotta have all major components in place but you get it inspected and wait 3 years. In the meantime you can register it and drive it or even sell it After the 3 years you get a legitimate title. Done it with I camp trailer. Most projects take 3 years anyway. And I doubt I'd even consider selling it before then. Titles don't scare me. Taking the time off work and having to haul it 1 1/2 hours each direction is the part I hate the most.
You can’t beat a 40 Ford pickup in looks, hope you can work a deal out and get it out of sitting in a field. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I can't hardly believe there are ANY 40 Ford 1/2 ton pickups sitting out in a field anymore! Looks like a good project to me.
You need a bill of sale and it has to be fair market value for the vehicle you're buying. They use the old car buyers guide which rates cars between 1-5, 1 being pristine and 5 as a parts vehicle. It has to be valued at least a 4 or better or they will not give you the registration. The last one I did had to be inspected by the State Patrol before they would process the paperwork.
It looks to have the water pumps on the head so it’s an earlier than 1940 flathead, 37 and earlier? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Get a hold of Bandit Billy. He has a build thread here and just bought a new bed for his 41 which is the same as a 40. He still might have the old bed and some rear fenders. He's down the road in Vancouver. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/yeah-its-got-a-hemi-41-shop-truck.1112750/page-6
The frame is the thing. If the kickups are rotted (common problem in 35-40) where the X pieces join, major repair or new frame. $1000 - $1750 if the cab does not have the usual rot in the corners. doesn't have a bed either so one will have to be located and rear fenders are unobtanium.
Just got the call. We have a deal. I will be going out Friday afternoon to start digging it out and prepping it to load on a trailer. Hopefully I'll remember to take my camera with me.
