Technical What did you do today?

Yard work, dusted off and started my 40 Ford 2 door sedan and drove my 41 Ford PU to the liquor store. Banged a few gears on the way home and parked it with a smile on my face!

 

Nothing exciting; but found the correct yoke and got the E-brake lever in and hooked up on the '47. Jacked in and put it on the high stands and located where the trans mysteriously started leaking once I filled it last fall. Have to pull the shaft and see why. Decided to put a speedo cable on while I was under there, didn't have a clear path; but it seems to turn OK; not as bad as it looks in the picture; but guess time will tell. Helped my friend figure out how to clamp up the fuel lines once he had the '33's tank in place; took a look and figured out there wasn't supposed to be that much line. Looked and found the lines were over the front off the tank and pinched between the tank and body; probably why he was complaining it was hard to get the mount bolts lined up. So, Mike got to remove the tank again (First time was Tuesday when he figure out all the fittings were loose and he couldn't at them thru the sender opening. Got the tank back in place and the hoses routed correctly and clamped down.

 

Took the tarp off my O/T Jag and started looking at taking the heated manifold section off. Searching for more information before I get the wrenches out. Removing it would reduce the width of the engine by about 2", is my motivation.

 

Waved goodbye to my MGTD parts car, more room and more $ for my roadster project.
Buyer is happy, I'm happy, definition of a good deal!

placed my new lookout on front porch to protect the house,
also did more work on my new swap meet trailor I was planning to use this spring nice day so I messed with a little of everything

 

Back a while, I wanted a hanging shelf .
Pinterest inspiration but I’m going way bigger.

Hung some plastic and put epoxy primer on the trunk lid for the '47 along with a couple other small panels. Even mixed the right amount of paint, didn't run out and didn't have extra. Be nice when the weather gets a little better and I can paint parts outside again.

 

I think technically it would be referred to as a "trench". If it was vertical, it would be a "deep" hole. But it's nice. I dug a 5" deep trench (about 28" wide) beside my driveway and poured squares of concrete for a motorcycle driveway. Not today though. Over about a month of mornings last summer.

Prep work on a fiberglass grille shell on our LSR roadster. Been beating it up for years as it’s about 1” off the ground. Resin/cloth on the backside and a little bondo in front. Filled some holes when we had a nose to run as a modified once. Looking at some sandable spray can primer if the rain stops.

 

Drilled holes in the dash for ignition and cigar lighter in 29 RPU .

April 10th 2020 Sanded the primer drips, runs and sags with 240 grit. Went over the rest of the top with a scotchbrite pad, wiped it down with mineral spirits and ran a tack cloth over it.

Mixed paint for the first time thinning with about 20% mineral spirits. Looks like I got that right since there was no paint left over. The foam rollers are not meant for this kind of paint. Two of them separated from their spindles. Thankfully, neither one bounced off my office jeans on their way to the floor. I was also loading up the rollers with too much paint. Got to fine tune my technique. All in all, the first coat turned out better than I thought it would.

107 degree heat index today. The dehumidifier helped a lot. Beer of the day was Uinta Brewing's BABA Black Lager.

 

That looks XLNT. I've sprayed a lot of paint from the cans that make a fan pattern. And I've said that the paint doesn't know if it comes out of a gun or a can. I just learned that it doesn't know if it is rolled or sprayed. I guess the trick is rolling it thick enough that it lays out flat.

 

Yea it was an attempt at humor, I have ran that trencher more hours lately than I need to, it will kick your butt

We had to make an emergency trip to Pocahontas county to rescue my wife, her sister, and mother. Big winds took down power lines, trees blocked the road, and this big one landed right between the cabin and her car. 10' from death on one side, 10' from a totaled car on the other. No cell service so they got to meet the nearest neighbor, who answered the door in his boxers. I guess you don't really expect anyone to knock on your door in such a remote place.

 

Oil primed the engine in preparation for first fire. Picked up the C4 from the tranny shop with all the goodies. Stopped by the dyno shop to see about breaking in my engine and doing the tuning and a few pulls next month. It was a good day.

 

I was hoping you saw the humor in my answer. I sliced out my yard a bite at a time with a bildoogie. < (Don't know the right name. Long, skinny shovel) It took a month because half the time it was filled with rain.

 

I Do know what that is I have one, I hate it more than the trencher. This is the toughest ground I have ever worked, It has about 0 to 4 inches of top soil 1 to 2 feet of clay (the kind that will hold water) then chirt rock. I have trencher drainage lines to get the water moving away from areas like the house. Its weird that I live on a hill and it stays wet. : exhausted

It's been kind of crummy out the past few days so I did some work indoors making my heater look pretty. Ran some water through it to no leaks.

Put some new parts together. Discovered that they don’t fit.

Is it really too much to expect that the mounting bracket, that comes with a part, will actually fit on that part?

Cursed. Modified bracket to fit the part it came with.

Mounted new part with modified bracket. Discovered that it interferes with another part.

Cursed some more. Made some new mounting brackets to resolve the interference.

Honestly it's not about how thick but it's about really thinning it with the mineral spirits so it self flattens, that's why you have to apply 6-8 coats to get coverage. The sucky part is you have to roll each coat three times to remove the bubbles that pop up but before it gets to tacky, then you have to wet sand every 2 coats, it's cheap but labor intensive.

That's what I called a sharp shooter in an earlier post. I guess the official name would be "trenching shovel" but names like "bildoogie" and "sharp shooter" make just as much sense to me.

 

Performed a "stratification study" on what I though was a good door. 3 layers of paint, 1 layer of some sort of black/grey filler(?)(its thick and tough as hell) , bondo and finally the skin of a lower door panel that looks like someone's pissed off girlfriend took a baseball bat to it back in 1952.
You have to expect this stuff so no big deal, always amazed at how some of this old body work hangs in there.

 

Bought some turf to make a "sort of" lawn. Wasn't easy when you are on a keto diet and you get light headed with every bend over. Tipped over a couple of times. Great fun.

Drilled for my trunk latch, spent some time aligning my front end and took it for its 1st ride on a state highway. I've got to get used to the straight axle front end but all pleased with the drive. Shot a short video of it at idle. May or may not work.

 

Finally got the firewall repaired and primed, now wait so I can seam seal.

 

Spread gravel for a new turnaround spot, and then kicked back to roast a marshmallow
