    Hello,

As mentioned before, Reath Automotive played a huge part of our 292/671 SBC C/Gas 1940 Willys Coupe build. When we had the 283 with 6 Strombergs, we bought a new distributor, plugs , wires and looms. There were other smaller items, but the hook was in place. So, when we decided to make our 283 into a 292 C.I. SBC motor with a 671 supercharger, out came the recommendations and purchases. Truck heads, ported and polished, Howard 8 cycle cam and lifter kit, Jahns blower pistons, aluminum rods and a reworked Reath crank for the SBC. There was a Joe Hunt Vertex Magneto in the purchases, too. We were set to start the big build with that stuff.

Why did we go to Reath Automotive? There were plenty of other cam makers, speed shops and automotive specialty shops all over So Cal, especially in Long Beach. The draw was Joe Reath and his constant information pipeline for all things drag racing and hot rod builds. He knew what was what and it showed up every week in the sponsored drag racing Coupes, Roadsters, Sedans, Altereds and dragsters at Lions Dragstrip every weekend. The top racers had some sort of connection to Reath Automotive.
    Legend of Lions: Joe Reath

This Model A Altered Sedan was the one that got to us every week. It could have been a hot street machine or the fast altered sedan that it was. It sparked something in my brother to do some design work and preliminary sketches. If the 25% setback motor was in the stock, maybe even a 10% setback, it could have been a street legal sedan, with a few mods.

With those late night 1960 conversations during recovery, those memories and wishes still bounces around my head sometimes, only to be sparked when a film clip or photo does the prodding. Despite his drag racing injury, recovery being a little harsh, my brother still had the hot rod/drag racing build mentality clicking on all cylinders. He kept at it until it just stopped one day many years later.

The fenderless Model A Sedan would only need a few mods or alterations for getting the rules to be street legal. The choice would have been ours in the making, with the help of a Reath Automotive sponsorship. (We were in line to get a Reath Automotive sponsorship with the 1940 Willys C/Gas Coupe.)
