Hot Rods # 10 Track Roadster Build- Marty Strode

Frenchtown, this is a street car, seating 2 people and this is the best setup I have found with very minimal bump steer, clearance around the engine,

 

Marty, what years are the VW steering boxes out of? Do they have to be reversed or can you use them straight out of the box? Thanks.

 

alan, I'm sure Marty will answer but I can tell you they're most likely 55-67 boxes. In 68 they didn't have the long steering shaft.

 

Alan, Joe is correct, 67 and older, with the V-split windshield. I have been using them for 50 years, probably had 20 or so, only one steered backward, so I used it when building this fellas 29, with the arm down.

 

Marty, that's the same one i used. Getting harder to find. Hope you don't mind me posting.

 

Hey Marty,
A few pages you were kind enough to explain "P. & O." steel. Pickled & Oiled steel.
Is there are anyway to clean hot rolled steel besides grinding, sandblasting etc.
Washing / Soaking in diluted Muriatic Acid or metal conditioner .. or ???

@Nacifan, one thing I have found to work extremely well for removing the black scale from hot rolled sheet is the paint buster wheels from Eastwood. They fit on an angle grinder and work real fast and get it clean. Seems to stay sharp.

Thanks Dale, I seem to struggle with removing mill scale, if I can take it to the blaster, I do. But this will help in many circumstances. We know how it screws up the Tig welding process.

I hate mill scale! I try to buy cold rolled or P&O steel whenever I can, but some stuff just isn't available in that form.

 

Graham08, that is a different version of the one from Eastwood.

 

Getting close to being done with the '40 chassis. The center braces in my frame were bent, butchered, and not usable, so I built some out of tube. The large opening should make the exhaust routing a breeze. Back on the Roadster this weekend.

 

Now that I am pretty much done with the '40, I put on hubs, wheels and tires on #10 for perspective. The turtle deck needs trimming for axle housing and spring clearance. With luck, it should be sitting on the floor, by the end of the week, at proper ride height.

What size tires are you running looks killer

 

Not sure if the question was for me or Blues, but these are 16", 750's on rear and 600's on front.

 

A while back, Raven had questions about the body mounts, here are the pics. There will be a sheet of 1/8" Neoprene rubber between the body and the mounting rails. I got the pedal bracket tack welded in place, as per my notes. Should get the pedals, bent and modified, and the steering gear set tomorrow .

I think Speedway Motors was mentioned as the body & turtle deck supplier.

 

I realize it's a race car, but would it be slightly cleaner to have the welded flange of the body mount point upward and hidden by the body? Or, maybe, the reason it hangs down is to celebrate the "mechanics" and "utility" of the bracket?

 

A Boner is correct, it's a Speedway body and deck that I bought in 2003 ! Their new decks are far superior, like this one, I used on a salt car. Notice the sunken flange around the opening, also the flange that meets the body is much wider for more strength.

 

Jeff, It would look cleaner with the rail inverted, but you are right about the race car aspect of these cars, and once painted, it's hard to notice it.

Thanks for that shot, I am going to save it. LARS 2004, the #2 was brand new, and has around 30,000 miles today. The best thing that trip is, Ed Justice Sr. stopped by, and we sat at that concrete table and talked for about a half hour. He told me about him and his Brother Zeke, working for Frank Kurtis, and Wynns, before starting Justice Brothers. And Friday night at So-Cal, Norm Grabowski had the crowd in stitches with his story telling. My favorite was the first drive in the Kookie car with the backward steering, while standing in front of the cars. Oh, the memories !

 

I brewed up the parts for the brake rocker arm, will mount it tomorrow.
