^^ Now this looks like something I'd have seen in the little mags in
the late '50s (with green pages). Talk about tasteful.

Kool pic Dan. Love seeing this Coupe. Ed Blassingame would be happy to know that the '36 is being driven a lot and everywhere.

Thanks Mick. Is Ed the builder of this car?

Yes Ed was the gentleman that built it. You had probably met him before. He was at the Stray Kat 500 every year.

    Hello,

If there ever was proof that custom car back in the late 1950’s early 60’s were also powerful enough to race at the drags, here is proof. When I was taking the first films of drag racing at Lions Dragstrip, I took all kinds of races. But, with the 16mm film reels, it was hard to check out what was going on because of the nature of the projector set up. We could not back up the film as it was running, (we could, but it would ruin or break the thin film) so, stopping at the right moment to see exactly what was on the scene was difficult.

But, with the old films made into digital formats, one can back up any digital film with ease to see what was what in the background frame by frame. It does not ruin the digital copy as there is no mechanical loops and holes to align for an exact movement forward or backward in the film projector. A projector? What is that, these days? All digital films can be shown on the big screen TV monitors with a simple push of the button.
    2 sec at the start…

A custom Buick sedan getting ready to stage for his/her race against others in the stock car (or possibly a Gas Coupe/Sedan Division) class at Lions Dragstrip. Pop off the flipper hubcaps clear out the trunk and go racing…what is more 1958-60 than that scenario? That was the core of hot rodding in So Cal.

Whether it was a street legal coupe or modified custom car, go racing to see how well the car performs. Back then, a modification that is not factory equipped would place the sedan in a Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. Even the small infraction of “stock” car rules places the hot rod/custom car in a gas class.

Cheater slicks with no factory tires to replace them in the eliminations would be placed in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class. Running custom side pipes or cut outs open, Gas Class. Even small things like no windshield wipers (a trend in sunny So Cal) would make the seemingly stock appearing sedan a Gas Coupe/Sedan candidate. Rules are rules and the Lions Dragstrip inspectors were ruthless. They had to be in order for equal rules applications for all racers. Time trial runs were the exception, but once the eliminations started, rules were very strict.

You don't see very many. I'd like to see one done, I hate using this word but done right. They have a lot of potential. Ian Roussel chopped and sectioned one on his show that I cant wait to see finished. It was sectioned and chopped four inches and he is going to change out the grill and re work the front end. Should be a good one to watch.
