I would like to know more about the carb set-up. They look like Rochester carbs but any info like model #'s, and what did you do to get them mounted on manifold. Is that just the "clamp-on" kit, welded on? brazed on?

 

Thanks! It was chevy powered, my pal Matt works with me at the shop every day and he still has it. The trans started slipping a few seasons ago so it hasn’t been out in awhile but we are planning a full redo on the car with a 4 speed to replace the auto trans, paint, chrome, full interior etc

 

Just Rochester 2gc carbs, I made the carb risers, tig silicon bronzed them to the cast log. Built the linkage, fuel log, etc

 

Shit I must be slipping or my memory is fried. Not sure how I got a chev and a cad mixed up haha.

The blower is the easy part, fitting it to the Flathead and making everything else work is the tough part!

 

Wrapping up a few loose ends on Sergio’s 32 before it goes out for paint. My pal Bruce swapped us windshields for a little less chop, I recut and raised irons a bit.


Got pats 33 out of flat pack form and kinda lookin like a car too.

 

Looking at the pics of Romeos roadster , love it, ( and everything else ) quick question re the frame under Romeos car, Can you confirm that its stock width, not pinched, just a good, old school, early body on a 32 V8 chassis , dropped on and bolted down as most kids would do

I have a 29 roadster on the boat making its way here, was offered an original 32 frame from a buddy local to me, but tight for cash and had planned to retain the A rails, but the position of the body on that frame with the cowl mount bolt holes showing on the chassis where the body narrows is looking so right. Im tempted to give the guy a call and secure the chassis... Its only money..

 

Yes his chassis is 100% stock dimensions, front and rear crossmembers have been pancaked (using a flatter 33-34 rear crossmember center section mated to the 32 ends out back and a model a crossmember up front). Sounds like a fun project, a model a and a 32 chassis go together like peanut butter and jelly!

 

Thats excellent, I just love the pureness off these builds .. Im not a big fan of pinched rails, I do see the aesthetic result but dont really see much performance advantages lol.. just a lot of work to align lines for show.. which I dont think most old timers would have spent the effort doing .. Rare to see it these days which is why I was asking .. I thought it was a totally stock dimension 32 frame , It actually looks better for it Im proper excited now, just about to send the email to my buddy with the news im jumping in. I will find the cash from somewhere

You do bring up an interesting relation to show and go...I often think of the go fast purpose built analogy that surfaces in a lot of threads here...

I think that certain individuals spent time on go fast And finely detailing Race Hotrods giving consideration to that area were the pinch was a consideration for aesthetics and perhaps streamlining as well as coach built like work overall, they may not have been the exception but were definately present and many pics within the many historic threads here at the Hamb highlight the fact Show and Looks were considered too...were these detailed Builders the exception...No...were they there...Yes...were their unique personal additions to the movement noted...I would say yes and no...

Street legal Hotrods were evolving, the Hoods were coming off and many Non Race but more the Looking Cool features were being applied...another one was graphics and flames...don't make it faster but adds an element to inspire and wow...so yeah this is that interesting divide in just Hotrod...if it doesn't make it faster it isn't worthy or worth it...

I do think as the movement evolved fancy Showy Hotrod became more and more common...Looks and Purpose Built had become partners so to speak...or maybe not at all...

I cant disagree with your sentiment. I was kind of thinking of it as if I was 15 /21 and building a hot rod when this stuff was readily available, Im not sure If, at that age, I would be diligent enough or skilled enough to pinch the frame for the sake of an inch overall. Its a detail I could live without if all I wanted to do was get my hot rod on the street asap. It was good to see it on that particular build. It made me smile broadly and think for a minute, like I was the builder nailing it together 60 odd years ago.. and asking the question..."Pinching the frame! Whats that then "? Perfect as it is thank you very much ...

 

I have done it both ways, I have also split the firewall on the sides and pulled the cowl sides out a bit too rather than pulling the frame. Just depends on the car. We do a lot of things these days to build a “traditional Hotrod” that weren’t very common on the actual cars we’re trying to capture the feel of.

I do think that while there were finely detailed race cars out there from the day the first sanctioned race was held, pinching a 32 chassis to suit an a body, whether a street or race car, was probably not done too often in the early days. Can anyone recall when they saw the first mention of it? 1960s era maybe?

 

Hung my desoto bumpers on the shop wagon yesterday, a few tweaks to the irons with the hot wrench and a little flattening the bumpers in the press and they fit like a stock application. If the weather holds up I may just drive this puppy to Cleveland autorama.

And I was planning to be hawking dropped axles out of the back of this shady character at Cleveland autorama right about now but covid19 had other plans for us all. Bummer but Oh well, back to work... building a mechanical fan drive setup for the Brock’s supercharged 59ab, pics soon!

I don’t know if I’d call it a paint job... but. If it was all one shade of raggedyness I could have tolerated it but 9 different colors and bare rust and old paint just falling off all over.... it needed to be all one shade at least.

 

@thunderbirdesq, Your simplicity in mods on that Delivery really set it off...what a stunning balance of Shiny, Custom additions and Paint and yes primer is paint...the 1940 Ford one of Henry's Milestones in Excellence...

 

Lol! Yeah I get it, it just looked so cool with that "barn find" look!
But I still dig it, and your other projects are looking good too!

Separated the spot welds on the rear flange of the fan hub sheave and shoved it forward and welded it back up, resulting in a ‘48 ford fan hub assembly with a 1/2” pulley sheave. Every little bit counts! I made a fan carrier bracket from steel plate, Then took a 60s ford 1/2 single belt crank pulley, made a spacer with a register to set the proper depth and center it and welded it all up into a single unit. Should work awesome and uses all old ford stuff.
