After 9 plus hours of driving we made it home late last night! Adjustments.JPG

I’m not sure what Pontiac called this color but it is starting to grow on me.

That´s a great Poncho! I love the 2dr sedans. My wild guess is you have a 59 engine. The 60 389 didn´t have the water necks at the front on both heads, it had a plug in there instead and a differant ( reverse flow) pump. That´s all from the very back of my head, but I remember something about Pontiac changing flow directions from 59 to 60.

here´s a pic from years ago, I swapped the tired stock 389 on this 60 for a freshly rebuilt 59...and I remember the cooling system being different.

Wow , my sister-in-law drove one the same color for years . Her's was automatic though. 389 2 barrel.
I borrowed it one time because my Comet was torn down for a cam change.
Pulled into a gas station to get gas and when I went to leave it jumped time . The timing chain was so worn out we took it of with out removing the gears. it stripped all of the plastic teeth right off the cam gear.

Great find! Pretty recent CA plates on the car. What’s the story?

Nice score. You west coast guys are lucky, anything like that around here needs the bottom 8 inches of metal replaced. To me that car screams custom.

Cool car. Stick is fairly uncommon. No reverse flow water pumps on Pontiac v8s. 55-59 did have the reverse flow in the heads w those distribution tubes however.

From the above post, it looks to have a T85. I was afraid it might have one of those goofy selector type GM stick transmissions. That's a good strong transmission that is also avail able with overdrive.

That is just nice! Thank you for sharing. I was wondering if that might be the case with the water necks in the heads.

Frank (Frank’s Pontiac Parts) said he bought it in AZ from a guy’s brother. The car had South Dakota plates on it when he bought it. He then registered it in his name. Car is currently on non op.

  22. Two Door ,Stick shift ,389 engine.great combo! Last year I bought a 60 more door. 389 automatic. I only want the engine. Too bad your so far away. mine has good glass and lots of trim items you could use. 60 pontiac 003.JPG

  23. That's a 318 Muncie trans. The same trans as the chevy used. Its not a real stout trans. It alsohas a non syncro low and reverse and a upside down 2nd and third shift lever. A full syncro Saginaw three speed or a four speed with a floor shift is likely in the cars future. The reverse cooling was ended with the 59 engines. All Pontiac engines from 55 thru 59 look exactly the same. Your engine could be anything fron a 287 to a 389. Look at the heads right above the exhaust ports. are there holes drilled to reduce vacuum from the intake valve stems. 370 and 1959 -389 engines had those holes. 60 pontiac 006.JPG 60 pontiac 007.JPG A 60 engine don't have reverse cooling. Picture's are of my 60 more doors engine.

Interesting that Pontiac would offer two different 3 speed column shifted transmissions in '60. The first one was out of an ambulance, however. Too bad; a T85 with an R11 would be a righteous combination.

  25. Its obvious that the engine has been swapped. possibly the trans was swapped also?

Not being any sort of Pontiac expert, I have to ask : which one was swapped? The ambulance or the Catalina? Also, how can you tell?

Keep in mind too that the ‘59 & ‘60 389 engines are different intake/water crossover than ‘61 +. I had 3 different 389 tri-power intakes at one time for mine, 3rd one was a charm. First two different. You have a great project! Look forward to seeing it progress. Here is mine. Little mild custom, mainly just the wheels using 16” hoops. [IMG][IMG]

Surprised the wheel covers still remain in tact.
