I'm in the process of putting together a BBC with approx. 9.2-1 compression and peanut port heads that will be worked over a little(port match on intake and maybe clean up the runners a little) And would like to hear any cam recommendations for it. I'll most likely use an Edelbrock RPM intake and a quadrajet carb. Not a race engine for sure, but would like some nice street performance out of it, and it will probably never see much over 5K RPM. Don't have the coin for a roller set up, so please stick with hydraulic flat tappet. Thanks in advance everyone

Good questions. The trans is a TH400 and rear gear hasn't been determined yet, but will probably be something like a 373. Vehicle weight is going to be about 3600 lbs

Look into the Lunati VooDoo cams. I have used several in different engines and they were all very good runners.

We have about the same combo here and it currently has a 3.45 gear or there abouts but it did have a 4.10 and it has been together for several years and runs great. I will have to see if I can come up with the number but we used Comp cams hyd. flat tappet and it at the time was the biggest one before they recomended using a stock converte IMG_0019 (2).JPG r.

Thanks. Is that an air gap intake?

It is, but it has a 600 Edlebrock on it. 40 over 454 , Probe forged pistons somewhere around 9.5. Comp roller rockers. Bad heads LOL , Summit brand headers, GM Corvette baffled oil pan, balanced, stock converter, the air cleaner is small for the cubes but so is the carb but I put my son in this when he was 16 so it was and still is plenty. He is 25 now and he only spun it out in the ditch twice that I know of ! I t has the stock posi rear end in it now but it did have a Moser 60 with a spool and a 4.10 in it for years . of yeah I forgot you can't run a spool on the street . Bullshit ! Build it , run it , enjoy it. But I grew up riding around in cars we had 5.86 's under. Those were the days.

  13. I have the 268-276 in my SBC and it has a great pull to it. Good manners in traffic too.

That one looks like it would be a bit much for the heads I'm using. The one that I figured would be best for me is the 262/268 version. Running stock torque converter too

  15. The 262-268 should be good for you. My CR is close to 10:1, car weighs around 3500 and I have a 4-speed and 3.89 posi under it. It goes like a scalded dog.

If those heads are all you can afford, ok. If not I would ditch them and get a set of regular oval ports. Lippy

I hear ya, but that's what I have. I think they'll be OK for what I'm looking for...at least for now! ;)

  19. Run the numbers on the heads, they may be better than you think.

I've got nothing but good things to say about the Voodoo cams.

These are the numbers on them, 14092360. Not finding much info, other than they are peanut port

  22. Do some look-up on the numbers, they seem to be an '80's truck head. They are probably fine for what you are doing. I have a better set at home for my next BBC project, got them in exchange close to 40 years from a machine shop I was dealing with.

  23. I talked with Comp Cams and they steered me to their XE268 cam, then I read up on them and saw that there were complaints of valve-train noise with them. So off to Lunati and the 268-276 cam was comparable. I was driving the car last night and still impressed with the throttle response it has. Quiet under the valve covers too.

Yup, they came out of an 88 suburban. Just not finding anything on chamber size or runner size. I have to assume they are designed for low end torque, which is good with me for what I'm doing. I have heard a couple negative things about comp cams as well, but have no first hand experience with them

  25. The Voodoo cam is popular around here, lots of guys like them. Mine has a lumpy idle but I can get it to under 900 with the manual transmission.

  26. I would first get rid of those peanut port heads and turn them into door stops.
GM performance heads and a Lunati RV cam would be my choice.

GM uses cams with 220 to 224 degrees of duration @.050 in there crate motors with good results.
While they are rollers so the duration is actually more than a flat tappet cam but I would go for something in that range.

A few years ago, ok , a long time ago I had a BBC in a OT Nova. It was a 1972 402, muncie, 4.10 posi. I rebuilt it with
10to1 compression pistons, original oval port heads, torker 2 intake and Holley 750. I put in a comp cams 320 duration, 563 lift hydraulic lifters cam. I thought the cam was going to be too much for the motor but it idled choppily at 700-800, and made good power to 5500. Car ran 13 flat at around 105-110 in the quarter. I miss that car. Good luck

Yeah, I'd love to build it wild, with cost no matter, but that's not gonna happen, at least not in the foreseeable future. The peanut ports will be OK for what I'm doing.
