Technical 1937 flathead lost bolt..help!

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Goodguy65, Feb 26, 2020.

  1. There are Magnetic and non magnetic stainless, I'll keep on trying to help by recommending, I don't read whole threads, they're usually kind of wordy and don't say enough that helps.

You seriously thought that after 28 posts on this thread you were the first to suggest a magnet?
    Give me strength.

alchemy>>>Through a casting oil drainback hole and hung up on top of the cam? >>>

We seem to be coming back to this possibility here and on the barn. Get out the coat hanger again and start jambing it in and around the drainbacks to see if might drop down. Jack E/NJ

Just button it back up and fire it up. It'll take about thirty seconds to find it. LOL

  9. Why don’t you look on Amazon at one of
those cameras small enough to look down drains. I picked one up for about $20 and it has been a lifesaver. It’s called an “endoscope”.

I think he left after "Turn the car upside down and shake it."
I like these mysteries but not when they leave us cliff-hanging.

sorry for the delay in the update..had to build a target to throw tools at...no bolt to be found so.....
I am pulling the motor..the front end has been disassembled, rad out and motor stripped.
turns out the back 2 plugs on the pan rail in the block are leaking..thinking about adding a couple goodies while its upside down..
any suggestions as to what would be good for a 37 flattie? I will likely put new water pumps in as a start.

  15. The intake is easy to take off - try that first and see if you have a better shot at finding it. If no luck, you are on your way to pulling the motor anyway so no harm or time lost ...

Vacuum cleaner, I wouldn’t use compressed air as it might jam it. Try adapting a small tube or hose, you my get lucky

Isn't that what they shove up your ass when you get a colonoscopy?

BJR you are correct...I tried running out of the hospital with it still in there but they caught me at the front door..."I just wanted to borrow it" I said...they walked me back in for more cookies and apple juice. so close!

Kids got me one of those colonoscopy style cameras for xmas one year... LED light on the end and everything... have to say it's been a bit of a disappointment when it comes to actually seeing whats going on inside a motor. I've had good luck wrapping fresh duct tape around a light wire backwards for nabbing non-magnetics. Hate to tell you this, but I lost a 1" wrench once while changing a combine engine... no, that's not a typo... it was a great big 1" wrench. That was 30 yrs ago and I've worked in that shed ever since... never ever saw that wrench again. Probably went down the road when we sold the combine.

With the intake off you can take advantage by installing a PCV setup.

I’d save racing goodies for a larger engine. 21 bolt racing stuff is rare and expensive.

This happened to me and thru God's intervention I found the nut i(in my case) on a little shelf inside the the block below the oil breather at back of intake...I was trying to put in a fuel pump rod...look hard with a flashlight before disassembling anymore.
If it has traveled beyond the point you might be able to turn the crank with your wrench s;lowly and the bolt may fall out.

Have you had someone else look for it? I don't know how many times I've spent hours searching for something only to have my wife walk in and say "you mean this thing?"

Well it sure wasn't a vacuum cleaner. That's a Dysonoscopy.
