Before he left us in 2005 Dave built a clone of this car that is racing with the NSS group to this day.

I don't know if you would really consider this to be a drag car....but it is obviously in motion in what appears to be a drag race.......even though it is a 4dr Edsel. 15829946745245360553467371654509.jpeg

"Suppose they realize how much that windshield is killing top speed?"

Probably it's there as part of the roll bar system. The one in back looks good to protect the turtle-deck.

    Hello,

One of the most anticipated races at Lions Dragstrip was the "battle of the twins." We had been watching both race cars blast the record books week after week. The dual Chevy motors ruled the dragstrips of So Cal for quite some time. One was an inline, dual, injected SBC versus the dual, side by side supercharged SBC motors. Lefty Mudersbach vs the Howard Cam Twin Bear FED was the race for all spectators at Lions. (and other So Cal dragstrips when they raced each other) It was a matter of injectors vs an unusual injector.

What is the oddest thing that we have ever seen on a supercharged motor? We have seen Two Port Hilborn Injectors, 4 Port Hilborn Injectors, then as the years rolled ahead, many different versions of fuel injecting for the race car motors. Square ones, round ones, and even ones that look like scoops, but it all started with a single injector and the rest is history.

But, as fast as new technology was advancing at a rapid rate, we need to go back to the 1959-60 early days in So Cal to see a new creation that just blew by most everyone. We were all accustomed on seeing a simple two port Hilborn Injector on top of many 471 /671 superchargers. They were starting to show up in 1960 for more power for all supercharged hot rod/drag racers. (in August 1960, my brother and I had a twin version, ready to pick up in Los Angeles.)
    upload_2020-3-5_4-56-11.png @ttwomotor…thanks upload_2020-3-5_4-56-48.png

It is one of those iconic looks for all technology during this time period. But, who had a giant, single Hilborn Injector on top of twin SBC supercharged motors ripping up the So Cal drag strips? The Howard Cam Twin Bear FED. Back then, the build of the twin was what caught the eyes of most people, including racers. But, we all missed the single huge opening Hilborn Injector on top of both blowers.

Several months ago, in a discussion with Donny Johansen, I asked him about the single Hilborn Injection. He had seen the movie I took of the Twin Bear in the pits at Lions and racing against Lefty Mudersbach. He said that the diameter was a huge opening, but within a year, the size of the new twin injectors surpassed the diameter of the big single. So, the twin injector was more efficient. Thus, the popularity of the twin started on a lot of race cars.

It must have been a Howard Cam thing, as the early Hirshfield/Cook Studebaker 2 door sedan also had one.

The early, Howard Cam, Studebaker Sedan was one of the only users of the single Hilborn Injector for racing.

    Bakersfield 1960

My brother was Howard Cam fanatic with many accessories (aluminum flywheel to a full blown 8 cycle blower cam and kit) from the cam company in/on our 1940 Willys Coupe. Instead of the 6 Strombergs we had, that single Hilborn Injector would certainly have helped or made us faster. (or at least a little different than Strombergs sticking out of the hood)

The Howard's Cam guys were always experimenting with new stuff. They were one of the first to run aluminum heads...on the car above too. Their own design and build.
They built - Cams, Rods, Heads, Rocker arms I believe, probably more.

The currently running, recreated car has the same heads on it that were run back in the day of the pictures above.

Howard made Aluminum 12 port heads for GMC 6 cylinder engines. I ran one. One day Howard came over and said "You've got my head on your engine." I was ready to fight. Then he told me he made the head. Didn't own it. Made the injectors too.

@DDDenny, Howard Johansen designed, had cast and machined his own aluminum heads. I’ve never seen the intake side, but the exhaust ports were large with square corners and used twice as many bolts as a Chevy head so custom header flanges were needed also.

Sure would like to see some shots of them or maybe a magazine article.
Just curious as to when they were doing their own heads.
I guess my original comment was based more on say the "58-62" time frame as I was thinking the GM skunkworks were toying with them then (pre-327).

I'll try and get a picture of the intake side when I go out to the shop later.
So I added the intake side. You can compare the size of the ports with the center bolt Corvette heads behind it in the picture.
