Was planning a 40 mile, freeway drive to a swap meet in a friends 31 RPU. 20 year old Grandson
said "you know Grandpa if you guys get into an accident with like a large SUV you may put a
dent in their bumper but your gonna die" Starting to re-think all this. The wife's RAV 4 is looking better and better.

If everyone thought that way, no one would ever drive old cars.....

or a lot of newer sub compacts, motorcycles, bicycles or even walk for that matter. I will concede that the route I choose often has something to do with what I am driving. With the traffic volume typical theses days, an eight lane freeway is no place for a 50 to 60 mph wheezer.

Considering how many miles I've ridden motorcycles in my life, I try to keep it in perspective, and not worry about what car I'm in. OTOH, an ex G/F used to want me to always drive her Miata when we went places in it. I was more uncomfortable being around traffic in it than any other car or bike.

40 miles? sheesh....go on a few 4000-5000 mile adventures in old cars, and get a better appreciation for risk.

A ship is safest in the harbor, but that's not why we build ships.

I’ll take my chances, rush hour traffic is a little stressful but most of the time I’m driving in town is during off peak hours and on the open road it’s easy to maintain a safe following distance to avoid problems.

Don't know about your area, but at weekends & the time of "day" you go to or from a swap meet here there usually isn't a whole lot of other traffic anyway.

Exercise due caution but don't stop living.

  17. Something HAS to kill you. We all die. Die doing what you love as opposed to lying in a bed with someone wiping your ass for you.
Besides, no one ever was killed in a 31 RPU in the old days......were they?

Are serious or just looking for a response? I made a roundtrip from Tyler, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska, over 10,000
miles including side trips in a '57 Thunderbird. Never asked myself if my life is in danger.

I've driven Clarence in HUGE cities in rush hour and all over the Rocky and Smoky Mountains. Ridden H-D motorcycles in the same places/times. Just ain't no point in worrying about "stuff". If it happens it happens. I'm too busy livin' to worry about things that might or might not happen.

Maybe the kid was just curious about the will!

  23. I used to liking driving my roadster to riding a motorcycle, only I didn't have to put my foot out at intersections. Some things are worth the risk.

  24. Doug, after being a member of the hamb 5 years now you don't have anything to worry about, that roadster ain't a bit closer to being driven on the freeway! :D

Sell some of your projects and get busy, you ain't getting no younger! HRP

I totaled a 77 vette in 1985. Should not have walked away from that one. Every day since that one has been on borrowed time. I still drive my old trucks in preference to my cocoon car.

Riddle me this - Why aren't school buses equipped with seat belts?

  27. Life is about choices.
Modern day vehicles-instant starts, cruise control, power everything, air bags, comfortable like a couch.
Old cars-noisy, loud, uncomfortable, poor fuel economy, no air bags, often no seat belt restraints, poor heating/defrost/wipers.
Choice seems easy to me..now, where are my keys to the '39?
There are many potential hazards in life, we can't live in fear of all of them, or we really aren't living at all.

A guy got seriously injured while sleeping on his couch when this tree fell during a wind storm last Sunday near Seattle. Stuff happens.
I'm a firm believer in seat belts as they saved my life in two helicopter crashes in Nam and a roll over in 70 Chev pickup and when I was rear ended by a garbage truck and knocked into a concrete barrier in my box with wheels a couple of years ago. First Chopper crash I looked down 20 minutes into the flight and I didn't have my harness fastened. Within a 30 mile radius of my house more people are killed by being thrown out of Suv's that roll over in the median on the freeway than anything else.
I'm not sure about the wisdom of driving a rig that can't match normal slow lane speed of the other vehicles in that lane on the freeway out on the freeway but have never felt unsafe driving any of my older rigs. I tend to be a defensive driver though. Driving a stock Model A pickup on the freeway where everyone is running 70+ may not be wise but I wouldn't flinch at driving an A pickup that can run with traffic or lead it. Fallen tree.jpg

Don't go. Swap meet probably don't have great SUV stuff anyhow.
