Hi Guys need some help? I am building a 1940 Plymouth coupe and I want to use cavalier rack & pinion steering. do they do a none powered rack rear steer? or are they all power racks? any help would be much appreciated. Regards Mark

If you're interested going with PS units, I have a complete '94 power Cavalier setup including pump. And a '98 Z24 (quicker ratio) setup as well. They were what I was going to use in my '40 Chrysler, but went with a Jag XJ6. < Note, you can delete the other thread.
Check on Pontiac Sunfire manual racks, my 48 Plymouth is set up with one. Chevy didn't offer manual steering but Pontiac did in the same platform.

I suggest you retain the stock steering if you are keeping the front suspension. I ran a 318 in a '48 Plymouth for years and it was a very pleasant ride. Motor had to be offset to the passenger side and I used a Dodge 4x4 oil pan as I recall to make it all happy. When the motor went south I went with a fabbed front frame stub with Mustang components and later wished I had kept it the way it was. With dropped uprights, cut coils and re-located shock mounts it was plenty low and drove great. With the Mustang II stuff not so much. Great project. Good luck!
I have had my 1940 Oz Dodge since 1971......318 Poly since 1973......you can swap in the 1941-1954 or 56 upper A arms which are a stronger setup, just use the 1940 onwards upper inner pin & bush on the 1941 onwards arm................I have had a 9" narrowed Austin 1800 rack & pinion since 1980, front end uses 1940 lower A arms, 1941-56 stub axles, Oz 11" vented discs, 1" thick sway bar of original shape, heim jointed links & relocated upper shock mounts........drives well........andyd
Relocating the shock mounts is the most important part of updating the front suspension on these old MoPars. There are kits and there are plans to make your own mounts widely available. Dropped uprights will also help by lowering the car considerably without compromising the ride or driveability. Good progress so far, keep up the good work.
Gasmonkey do you have any more photos of your left hand motor and the steering shaft ive got a 41 im working on doing a 318 as well manifold and steering shaft clearance is what im trying to figure out now
