local junkyard guy has some general jumbo [he says14"] wheels to fit 5 on 5.5" hubs... should I look closer ? have seen 15" jumbos … is he inhaling accetelyne ? if not, what are they worth...
Yes, 14 inchers are common. Not a lot of demand for them, I sold a set for $250 a couple years ago....the guy that bought them was trying to get $1k for them on ebay. Dunno if they ever sold. The center caps are impossible to find and worth way more than the wheels.
The most common General Jumbos are the 14 inch eight spoke ones. !5 and 16 inch wheels were also made. The 15 inchers have 9 spokes and a larger diameter hubcap. The 14 and 15 inch wheels are wide. The 16 inch wheels are narrow. Disc wheels were also available in 14 and 15 inch diameters and are wide rims. Jumbos were the "brand" name for the low pressure change over wheels sold in the very early 1930s by General Tire. Other tire companies sold similar tire/wheel combos including Firestone and Goodyear. Because the Generals were by far the most popular, the term Jumbo became associated with all of these wheels as a generic name. This has resulted in much confusion 90 years after their time. If there is any interest I can take pictures of various Generals in a day or two.
In the late '60s I had a pair of 14'' 6 luggers I found on a boat trailer. They might have been Clarks, though. Nobody was paying any attention to who made what back then
I saw a set of those on a car that had been painted to look like wood. I about freaked out until I realized they weren't wood, just painted that way. Something about a blown small block and wood wheels makes me nervous!
I sure would like to have a set of 16" General Jumbos. I had a set of 16" Goodyear Airwheels briefly, many years ago.
Was there a Martin wheel too? I know Martin tires are still coveted by some old timers and recall dear ol Dad talking about em.
