Every winter I try to do something to improve the 11 Southeast Gasser Association races. One of the major problems that all elimination style races have is down time between the quarter finals.
So we need something to act as a filler while the cars still in competition cool down for the next round. Problem is we are trying to keep the fans at every SEGA race in a 1967 atmosphere. So what ever we use for a filler has to fit the 1967 era. This project is the start of my idea of what a 1967 wheel stander would have been like back then. Our last idea of a filler was the Super Stock class but it got so popular we had to make it a class in 2019. Could the same thing happen to the wheel stander, I guess time will tell.
This is going to go a little slow it's in real time. Wheel Stander 1.jpg

This body was so rusty the chassis right behind the cab had rusted into and broke when we was loading it. Talk about saving one that was on it's way to the crusher. wheel stander 2.jpg

First step was to get it all apart and cut out what was left of the old floor that we wasn't going to need anyway. My right hand man Tom White handling that. Wheel Stander.jpg

Chassis repairs done, setting at ride height with engine, trans, rear end and V- Drive mocked up ready to make mounts. Tom White checking our progress.
(I know it's a sissy automatic but it's a wheel stander what else could I do)

With everything where we think it needs to go we made mounts. My first wheel stander build so I really don't have a clue. Note the trans cross member made to clear the drive shaft that has to come back under the trans to the rear end yoke.

I'll shake it down to make sure everything is right, might do the driving at the first few races but my time is so limited I can't have much fun anymore.

How does that work? Two speeds in reverse and one forward? Or does the v-drive make everything right. Noticed the diff is flipped over. Or am I thinking double backwards. LOL. Lippy

The V-Drive makes everything right. It's also 10% under drive so I'm thinking a 4.10 gear will be about right. I seen some that are running off the coast side of the ring gear and that can't be right for long term life.

Gotcha! Always wanted to try and drive one of those but would need a very wide and large test area for me. LOL. Cool build. Lippy

I think it will fit our program pretty well. I hate down time and I know the fans do. I think the kids will love it even if the grown ups don't. Get the kids interested the dad's will have to come LOL.

Great idea Quain. I’ve always loved watching the wheelstanders (and the jet cars). When I married my wife and inherited her three kids they had never been to the drags. I took them to an event with both and they were hooked. We’re lucky to have the General Jerry Lee team of wheelstanders at a lot of our local races.
You’re right, the fans, especially kids don’t like down time. Another thing that helps is a P. A. system that can be heard and announcers that explain what folks are seeing. Even if it’s just explaining why we’re down for a bit.
I notice that a lot of wheelstanders use the split case Casale V- drives, what kind are you using? Looks like a cast iron case.

Do you know why wheelstander drivers wear baggy pants?
Gotta put them "big balls" somewhere!

100% right on the announcer, we have the same announcer at all 11 of our SEGA races for the reasons you just mentioned.
I'm using an old Crusader (Walter / Borg Warner) V-drive That was donated to the Project by a good friend and old time drag boat racer Charley Wikie.
