Found this in a field while buying another car. The owner is willing to sell, but wont give an initial asking price. Curious what you guys would pay for it? No title, all glass broken, rust in the floors, and trunk. No interior to speak of, no motor, trans. Huge dent in the rear driver quarter. He does supposedly have a hood for it. I was thinking like $1000-$1500. Let me know what you think.

I am a big fan of these fat Fendered cars, so I usually am willing to pay more than the damn things are worth. Your idea of $1,000 to $1,500 sounds like a fair price. I may go ads high as $2,000 or even a little more but like I said I really love these cars.

I'd say your gut is about right on this one. But it needs everything, it's missing a bunch of stuff, and they aren't high dollar cars done. I'd offer him $500-600 and go from there.

To me, the two vehicles mentioned are so far apart in condition that no meaniungful comparison can be made. No title makes a big difference.

I think you're right on with your price estimate.

Of course the guys who think every car that isn't rust free and complete with title is worthless had to chime in but here in the real world where we live I think between $1000 and $1500 that would make a cool project.

Your quote would apply to this car for sure. This one would need glued back together

  13. I love 41's but they are not high dollar cars. I hate to say it but 5-600 is all I'd pay unless I had a good parts car to help it

  14. Thats about what I would pay in Alabama, where no title doesn't matter. But Texas? Might be on the edge of the value.

I've had a couple of 46-47 Ford coupes and two convertibles so obviously I think they are cool. Sadly even when finished, only the convertibles bring much when for sale. I'd pass on the 41 in question.

I've had a 'few' '41-'48 Fords and Mercs, too. Relatively cheap to 'bring back', depending on which parts, etc. are needed. Sedans sometimes bring more $$ than coupes, but as Gman mentioned, the convertibles bring the high dollars. (and the 'Woodies'...)

That guy on ePay is about $10k or more heavy on his asking price IF it's a titled runner, IMO.

A 41 generally needs to be great to pristine or a hot rod to get past the $10k mark, in my observation.

I'm in the $500/$600 to $1k max camp. There are some nice looking parts there but it looks like a good parts car or vintage race car to me.

Right. I really like these cars also but to me it's worth half of what I could part it out for because it's such a pain to get a title here.

But, if that isn't a problem for you, it's really not a bad starting point and if you can get it for what you think is fair, go for it.

It is a judgment call & perhaps as low an offer as possible. Any car is the cost of its sum of parts. There is a lot of sums required to acquire the missing parts and to refurbish the damaged sections. The 41 is a one of when it comes to the fenders, grilles etc which limits the parts pool vs the 46-48. If the car was given away, its cost to be made a runner could be crippling. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm in the $500 range also. Good luck selling it.

Local guy was offered scrap on a car and scrapped it.

  24. Paying $1000 or $1500, so what's your risk of overpaying? ......$500? ......$600?? That's not the end of the world as we know it. On a higher-priced car, say $10K+, you can easily "overpay" 2 or 3 times that and shrug it off.
Your bigger risk is the condition and what you're going to have to spend to fix it up. (And the hit you'll take if your ambition fades, you don't finish and you sell at a loss.)
The fact that the owner doesn't throw out a number makes me wonder if he thinks he has The Golden Ticket. Make your offer and be prepared to walk. Don't bid against yourself right away if he doesn't bite. Give it a week's time for reality to enter the negotiation...... for both of you.

With the number of 41 Ford coupes in better condition available that no title junk pile is worth scrap price.
It would be a waste of money to restore it.
    Just not worth it.
Cars of the 40's and 50's are dropping in price.

So sad to see so many people here cheering for this very fixable early Ford coupe to get scrapped because it's not "nice enough". Don't you guys even enjoy building cars?

I think it depends on what you intend to do with it.

i/e restore it...then the difference between a $500 dollar buy or a $2500 buy, isn't that much in the end.

Now if wanting to make a hotrod runner out of it, get it as low as you can.

Regardless, I love those 40/41's like that, pure sex needing some HP.
