History Bubble Skirt History

I made my skirts from fiberglass bubbles by Knight Prowlers. They were originally intended for MERCS. Icut them to fit the chrome line and added the needle points with Matt and cloth. I reshaped the front edge to fit the body contour. I tried to emulate the skirts on Dave Jenkins 57.

Hi...The best bubble skirts I've ever seen was on a 49 Cadillac..they were cut out of the full length of a 1949 Cadillac hood...they rolled full length under the fender...I will post a pic if I can find it in my photo archives

 

The skirts posted above (now owned by Sondre Kvipt) were mine. i made the mistake of not removing them from my shoebox when it sold it overseas..they were the genuine thing,,REAL Jimmy Jones skirts..the first pic shows the car at it's new home in Finland (skirts still attached) ..the second pic shows it when I owned it (skirts are kind of hard to see in the pic, nut they are there)....Probably never find another pair..they were awesome

And another from Car Craft 1958. I also heard Dave Jenkins say that they cost him 2 weeks pay for a set of Jimmy Jones bubble skirts.

 

Anyone ever heard of Benson Bubbles? I got these in a package with some regular '51 Merc steel skirts, the bubbles are fiberglass but they seem really well made, I stuck one up against my '55 Packard and they would fit awesome with some mods to the clamp mechanism. Never heard of the maker though.

 

Correct me if I have it wrong but weren't the first ones inset flush in the wheel well arch, perhaps inspired by dry lakers, and later evolved into over lapping covers? .......and those soon became more fanciful with the custom noses and phallic shapes?

Benson was making fiberglass skirts in the 80's, as real steel ones were getting hard to find, even back then. They were pretty much "universal" fit skirts. I just sold a set off the 56 Olds I'm building. Being 'glass, they were easily modified to fit whatever car you were putting them on.

 

Chopolds, I have a set of "Benson Bubbles" but I got no real history with them when I got them. Do you know anything about who "Benson" was? Mine have a business card attached to the inside but an internet search gave me no info beyond the name.
