I tell students the difference between good and great is knowing how to fix or work yourself out of a mistake or difficult situation.
A poor technician doesn’t care about mistakes unless it affects a pay check.

Knowing your limitations doesn’t imply “lack of skill” It means you understand how to get the desired result with what you have.
Lots of 6 and 7 figure high end cars were built by guys wrestling sheets of aluminum over various stumps using multiple pieces to form a panel.

We do appreciate the humility or politeness extended to us guys on the sidelines watching this amazing build. .

 

Just stumbled on this build summary today, and I can't wait to see how it turns out! I haven't seen the final product yet, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the tease.

 

Early on we knew we needed to re-make the tops of the quarters to work with the Crown Vic style trim & accept the new quarter windows.

 

We didn't like the stock tail lights. @Jeem suggested using modified Galaxie lenses & backup housings.

 

The absolute hardest thing that needed done for this build is the custom trim that extends from the B-pillar all the way back to the tail fins that needed fabricated. Mike spent allot of time building the dies & welding all the pieces together to make it happen.



Test run to make the final product.

 

We found out early on working with the stainless the best way to tackle welding it & blending 2 different part together is to use original Ford trim & cut strips to use as fill rod.



We went to the wrecking yard again & found some nice flat rocker trim pieces from a Lincoln to re-purpose.


After working out any small flaws on the Lincoln trim we formed it on the brake before running it through the Pullmax to give it the final profile.

Welding the trim together is a delicate deal.



We re-used the stock Vic trim to finish out the ends above the tail lights. It involved adding along the bottom to match the new trim.



Then comes the extremely tedious task of metal finishing the welds.

Wow that trim must have taken forever to fabricate.

 

Excellent stuff. Custom made stainless trim is just taking it to a new level. You left me behind with the regular custom fabrication, but working with stainless.. well, wow.

A few years ago I took a TIG refresher class and had a chance to do some stainless welding. It was a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately I never had further occasion to do any stainless and have since sold the machine...but I’m thinking about buying a smaller unit. I don’t think I’m up to what your guys did though.

Appears to be 1956 Fairlane rear bumper ends. Not used on wagons in 1956. Hoping he will tell us if he modified the rear bumper like he did the front. Removing the flat license plate flat section was awesome.

Kudos to your welder. ..nice small welds (low bead height ), makes finishing so much easier. Good work.

 

I was impressed with your teams talents in metal fab and then you did the stainless....... I have refurbished enough stainless trim to realize how much skill and patience it must take to weld it then metal finish and get the results you did. I tip my dust old hat to you guys.
