Hot Rods # 10 Track Roadster Build- Marty Strode

You will be tired of looking at pictures, when I am done.

 

How about a #11? I'll provide the raw materials.

 

I grew up with my Dad's roadster sitting beside the house, I was born in 1949 so I never saw him race that car but did him race others. This was his good friend that had a car but got others to drive it. Miss him every day.

 

We will see how this one goes, I have several of my own projects to complete. My '40 PU is out getting ready to paint, the '53 Ford COE, needs the Grumman box finished up, the '29 RPU needs the chassis finished. I also have a '50 Olds Coupe that has been painted and upholstery done back in '96, that requires some assembly. That's a lot for an old to take on !

 

Thanks for posting, I got to know and make friends with Roadster Owners and Drivers of that period, some daredevils and great folks !

Man! That T roadster brings back memories. @Marty Strode I remember when your red roadster was featured in Street Rodder in the early 2000's. I just remember thinking wow, why don't all roadsters look like this. Grant it, this was the Foose and Boyd era. Glad to see you are building them. Thanks for sharing.

Back then, the stick welding was done in the yard, the 220 dryer plug was just inside the back door.

 

I just remembered, I have another perimeter frame that I built for a Supermodified that never got built. It's based on a 94 wheelbase, I could add 6" to the rear section and it would be fit for a Track Roadster. Hmm, maybe I will install some mounts and offer it for sale, later this Spring.

 

Ah yes, the Supermodified that never got built. It was supposed to be quite the multi tasker as I recall...

Larry, this frame was under this "T" Coupe, I still have the body, and it's for sale. My idea was a street version of the Peat Bros, shown in the second photo, when Al Pombo raced it. How would you like to pull up next to that, at a light !

 

Somewhere I have a pic taken when I pulled up next to a dude driving a full on replica of the #11 Steve Kinser Quaker State 410 sprint car, "Iowa Plates" and during The Knoxville Nationals. I've seen things...

I got a very late start today, but got the K-brace tubes fit and tacked in place, and added a little gingerbread to the set-up block. My schedule will allow progress on this build and my B/SR Roadster PU to continue this coming week.

 

How come I haven't been to Knoxville ?

 

Cuzz you just haven't lived Marty !!!!! You've been too busy actually building and racing stuff instead of just sitting in the stands, drinking beer and eating breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches like all the rest of us !

Had a rain out in 1970, so we could not run our stock car at a local E. Iowa dirt track. Decided to make the 3hr. run to Knoxville to be a spectator for sprint cars where it wasn't raining. Opened up a whole new chapter in my life of internal combustion stuff. Those were the good ole days (and deadly) of roll cages but no wings.......took real men to wheel them.

You REALLY would enjoy a Sat. night race......or maybe a June visit to the vintage event......followed by a full day of the museum, book store......and maybe some bench racing with some of the folks who maintain the museum...... fill it with a rotating batch of cars.......and tell some really great stories about guys like pioneer sprint car builder Bob Trostle who had a gift for some of the very things we enjoy watching you do. Let us know if you plan a trip......I'll buy you a beer and a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. Have fun.

 

Hey Buddy, I finally used most of the gift certificate to the Helvetia Tavern you sent. I have ten dollars left, but they are remodeling and won't be open for a month or so. When this car is done, I would like to deliver it, and Knoxville will be on the route, sounds like fun ! I have seen a few Trostle cars, and they are very competitive in the vintage series around here, I think my friend Del McClure has one. Iowa has some real famous racers for sure, dating back to John Gerber.

 

AH to have the proper tools for the job. Saves a LOT of time for important stuff. No manual hacksaw and half round files like most of us would be using.
