Technical 1940 ford coupe

what do you think is a good size tire package for a 1940 ford standard coupe traditional hotrod. humbly john!

 

bias 560-15 front l78-15 rear

 

165-75 15 on 5" wide rims front (approx 25" tall) 235-75-15 on 6" or 7" rear (approx 29" tall) Not the WW ones on the avatar

The "look" will also depend on what changes you have made to the original suspension. With that said, click on photos below to obtain larger photos. The car shown below in the first photo also has a 4 in. dropped axle, a Posie reversed eye front spring and a stock rear end. The Posie spring lowers the car almost 1 1/2 in. The Magnum axles lowers the car another 2 inches. The smaller dia. front tires are 25.8 in. tall which also drops the car. It has:
5:60 x 15 on the front with 15 x 5 1/2 early FORD truck rims.
7:60 x 15 on the rear with 15 x 6 rims with 4 in. back space on the rear.
The second photo is the same car years ago with the same front tires but with 1950 x 5 1/2 Merc wheels on the front and the stock axle. On the stock rear are 8:20x15 tires on 15 x 5 1/2 1950 Merc rims. Rear suspension is still stock.

Mine are 195 65 x15 on a 6" front and 235 75x15 on a 7" rear

I'm running 165/80/15 on 15x5 and 235/70/15's on 15x7 American TTO's.

 

Im running 185/75/14 on 14x6" at front, and 235/75/15 on 8x15 at rear, vintage american racings, Hank

 

I have 195/65/15 on 5.5 in rims front and 235/70/15 on 7 in rims rear. I may change the fronts to 205/70/15 after I get the weight on the front ( engine ,trans, rad, etc. I don't have a dropped axle.

I found out the hard way(of course) NOT to buy tires and wheels before the front is DONE. on my 1939 Ford coupe, I have a 4" dropped axle, reversed eye springs. I am also using aSpeedway Motors chevy disc brake kit. The bottom of my grill is 4" off the ground with the 175x55x15: tires and 2004 Mustang wheels. the Mustang wheels have a lot of backspace and a lot of offset. all I could fine that will fit. I am not done with the front tire situation yet, but it can be a problem if not thought out as I did.

 

I'm just too damn old, I guess. To me a '40 coupe should be level, no rake, or a very slight tail droop. Cadillac sombreros, on the front at least, on the rear also if you have room after you install the teardrop skirts with a flare at the bottom. And the ride height should be low, but not so low you can't get in and out of driveways, etc.
Paint should be black, no flames or such, with tinted windows.

 

No, you're not too old. It's a "generational" thing.

I must admit that my '40 coupe has a bit of a fwd rake, even though I have commented that I like them level or just slightly tail rake.
But I didn't build it, I bought it that way and just don't have the desire to redo the suspension as it drives and rides great as it is

 

Front 195/65 15's on 6 inch wheels and rear are 225/75 15's on 7 inch wheels. The front spring has reversed eyes and couple of leaves removed with stock axle. The grille chin has 5 3/4 inches of clearance. Grilles cost $$$$, so thats low enough for me. Later Bill

 

205/70R14 on front, 225/70R15 rear.
Chassis Engineering rear with 2" blocks, CE dropped axle and spring on front.
