Hello everyone, i need some guidance. I'm building a 292 inline 6.. where can I find flat top pistons and what brand do you prefer... Also where could someone find 1.94 inake valve (same motor).
isn't the valve the same as the small block V8 valve? I don't know where to find flat top pistons, what compression are you aiming for? I'm putting dished pistons in the 292 I'm thinking about putting together soon.
Federal Mogul made flat top pistons for 292 chev six, we used them in our hyster fork lift when motor was rebuilt.
https://www.12bolt.com/store/c5/Pistons.html Can't give an endorsement as I've never dealt with them, but seems to be the go to guy for 292 stuff these days.
The pistons that Karl are referring to are propane pistons. They are the cheaper way to flat tops. The other way is the custom piston makers. They are not so cheap. L Hud
With todays gas I wouldn't use flat top pistons. A thin head gasket and possibly mill the head will get you all the compression ratio you can stand. A 292 has plenty of HP and tremendous torque. Its not a high RPM engine. The will certainly pull and haul a heavy load. and will use as much fuel as a big block doing it.
But are they still in production? If not, then you'll probably have to get custom pistons. I have Ross pistons in my Hemi, they make good stuff, although you get to pay good money for it.
The 194 head will raise the compression, but the ports are so bad in it, you will need a bunch of porting to use the raised compression.
A better site for all the answers you'll ever need about six cylinder engines. https://inlinersinternational.org/
I'm aiming for 10.5:1 or 11:1 compression. I have 194 head, 250 head and a 292 head... but no one has any information on cfm on 6 cylinder heads.. I'm waiting low end torque. So I'm wanting .060 bore. Flat piston. Roller rockers, but not sure on which head and valves
I'm looking into Howard's hydraulic flat tappet cams. Just need to decide on what rpm range I'm wanting
If you are wanting torque and a good street cam. The 270 hyd. RV cam is the most common one . Has plenty of torque and will run also.
Sounds like your RPM range has already been decided. The 194 head doesn't breathe well, but doesn't have to at the bottom end.
