    I think originally they were 1/4" slot head machine screws. But now I have hex head bolts on mine. I have the hood welt covering them up.

    If you were restoring your car the correct fasteners are 12-24 binding head screws, in S-2 finish. The entire kit is available from Third Generation Auto, the company that took over for Ray Nacewicz for $4.00 a set.

    I used hex head and ground the head thinner so it would clear the hood.

    An original unaltered shell has holes for #12 bolts. If you use 1/4" you will need to drill them out slightly.

    Want to avoid that. I see to much of it but I'm also guilty of it but moving on from that phase.

    This one won't for some time.

    That's what I'm going use.

    Conclusion after being at GNRS today and looking at all the 32 shells. I'm going with slotted pan heads.

    I get it. But how often does a grill shell go on and off after mock up work is done using something else?;) I mean I hate all the prep work and sanding before paint. But it all about the look that matters, right?

    FWIW;
    By using hex, You can leave the hood felt/web in place ( mine is glued on ) and get a spanner to just sneak in between, - not with a screw.
    Mines been off 3 times in the last couple of years, but I run a Flathead.............

    Whatever blows your dress up!:D
    I've never had luck keeping slotted type screwdrivers in the slot and I'd rather not take a chance of the screwdriver gouging something or skating across a nicely painted surface.

    Due to the wonders of the internet, I discovered that phillips screws were invented in1937. However, Robertson head screws (a Canadian thing) came much earlier and I have found some that I believe were original on my Model T and old Henry did use them.

    Canadian Model A Ford's had square socket drive screws (Robertson screws). I wouldn't doubt that if the Model A used them, Model T's also did.
