I watched a couple snippets over a couple days. Watching BJ is watching a lot buying and look at me types. Most vehicles were over my budget but saw a couple "well bought". What gave me a second look was a 1937 Buick cabriolet that was an award winning car that sold for $33,000. https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1937-BUICK-46C-CONVERTIBLE-236114 . One disappointed seller. Why would a person go through the headache and expense if they can snag a deal like these if the car is as good as represented.

Nice looking 41 truck at $16K

Similar vehicles at a higher price point. So maybe looking at them first hand and close up is the difference.

  2. Wednesday night, a black, steel (I assume Brookville, but I don't know for sure) deuce highboy roadster, sbc (tripower I believe), tan top...looked pretty nice, would have been HAMB friendly...$29k...did I say it was a deuce...you know, 32 Ford...be patient, I may be able to afford one yet.

"Sam Pack's 51 Mercury sold for $32,000. I didn't see it in person but his cars are normally pretty high quality. Made me sick as I'm building a 51 and there is no way I'll do it for $32,000. Really makes me wonder...…... "

They sold a '49 mercury for $150,000 the day before.

Years back, when my employer was a bidder, I went to the Palm Beach auction and sat in the "special section" If you've ever been to a BJ auction, a cheap light twelve ounce beer costs (at that time) eight dollars! Not so in the "special section". Beer and hard drinks are complementary, as many as you want, and I swear they assign a barmaid to watch you because she is right there with another one, just as you are finishing your drink, every time.

  5. Ebay bad, auctions bad, hot-rodders dying out, prices low - so many negative waves on the HAMB recently....

  6. I am just glad there is something like BJ for the rich maladroit to use to recycle their money back into the economy...

  7. I don't mind if the price goes up or down some at times, I've owned my '46 International since '79 my '37 Cadillac since '94 and my Model A since 2012. I don't think I will ever sell them. that said, it would be nice if they would be worth something by the time the kids or grandkids sell them.

Spot on. I've always believed this, since back in the 70's when the high-dollar cars were $20,000 roadsters, and I was driving a '48 Pontiac convert my wife was unhappy I'd bought with $400 of tuition money! Now, 45 years later, I'm building $20,000 roadsters and still build cars I spent $400 on to buy!

That 51 woodie was a steal at 22k. Some others not so much such as the Street Beast 34 cab that went for 40K! Go figure!

  11. I deal in old Ford trucks a lot, and old pickups are very popular right now...especially factory SWB and 4WD's. I can't believe the numbers 67-72 Ford pickups bring.

  12. Betcha the buyer of the 34 didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground about 34's. He paid about 25K too much. LOL

I watch that about as much as I watch Gas Monkey! A lot of shows are Better with the sound turned down, except a Hot Rod (Of Course).

100% agree, I can only take so much regaling of how the GTO Judge got its name, where the gas goes in a 57 and about the Mopar beep beep horn story, heard them too many times. Steve on the other hand, knows his stuff.

I believe it, same as a casino. Care for another vodka tonic to help loosen that wallet of yours up? Coming right up, on the house!

I've been an appraiser is some capacity for about 20 years now. Not once did I appraise a car on what anything sold at Barrett Jackson for, or any other auctions for that matter. It was retail only. Not to say appraisers do not use auction data on classics, it's just not going to be the run of the mill stuff.

We are going to get 8-12" of snow today,40+ winds tomorrow followed by sub zero temps Sunday/Monday.
It's a car show for car nuts during the winter season. Prices and commentary I don't get wound up about.
I will say this. The people spending the money on these vehicles in some instances may not be 'car smart' but they are smart enough to make enough fun money to spend it. Maybe that's what rubs people the wrong way

I have no interest in these auctions unless something historically significant is going up for sale.

Quit watching BJ a couple of years ago, as well as Mecum. Just not realistic to me. Am I jealous, maybe. Can I afford one, probably, if I call JJBest Banc. That doesn’t seem logical.
All the tv auctions and tv builders just aren’t interesting to me lately. Do i still have an interest, yes, traditional cars are still what I like. Trying to get the drive to get out in the garage. Is that a problem? That’s a definite maybe.

It's purely entertainment and nothing more. Personally I like watching it and if some drunk overpays for a ls powered 58 Corvette, so be it, he earned the money.

tonight or tomorrow there is going to a original 1965 A990 Coronet and 1964 Thunderbolt. Interested to see what they go for.

I can't sit through the Hollywood glitter either. The price it sells for a lot of times the sale falls through after it's over. Imagine some poor sucker paying a fortune, then later finding out it's a clone, or not numbers matching of full of bondo. Much better buying from the owner.

  22. I got a nice straight 67 swb. Absolute perfect hood and grill.
    The bed is super.
What kind of numbers are those getting.

I record the auctions and then watch on fast forward if I see something interesting I’ll watch that. Get through a three hour show in 20 minutes with a lot less nonsense. People are still spending money, tastes have changed.

F the money, build what you want, nobody gets out alive.

  25. That's like saying you have a nice strait model A coupe with a nice hood and grill and asking what its worth with no other info...could be a 1500 truck, could be a 30,000.00 truck

I am mainly into F250 4x4's, and decent original paint F250 factory 4x4's are in the 20-30K range for a driver. A restored 69 sold at Mecum last year for 77K. But this is venturing way way way too far off hamb land

The muscle cars and pickups are running strong numbers!

  27. True. I thought I overpaid for a clean drive at 3500 for it.
I was kinda shocked when a steel 32 roadster with a really nice nostalgic look brought 30k then a K10 right after it brings 30k.
Nice seeing trucks get respect. Sucks seeing these hot rods go for pennies on the dollar. On the bright side that 35/36 coupe may finally get affordable

Once you factor in buyers premium, taxes (not terribly bad since its AZ) and transport, some of those seemingly great deals really arent so great.
