Here's a couple of pics of Gene Winfield chopping a top on a 33 Chevy in the basement. 20180303_113237.jpg 20180303_112539.jpg

One memory I have had little to do with the cars there. Back in the early eighties the Detroit Autorama would run for five days and popular television stars of the day would appear on the weekends. A friend of mine had a car entered and the Friday night after the show ended and closed to the public a bunch of us and our then girlfriends were sitting around behind his car consuming manly beverages. Two guys walked up and the girls we were with saw them and were trying not to scream. One of the guys it turned out was the actor John Stamos. He was then a teen Heartthrob on the show General Hospital. He came back and sat and talked with us while the girls we were with took pictures with him and were trying not to freak out. None of us guys watched soap operas and had no idea who he was. He was a pretty cool guy and we enjoyed talking to him. It wasn't until the next morning when we walked into the show to find a line of girls that stretched from inside Cobo hall to Dayton Ohio to meet this guy how popular he was.

No pics but a nice story. I had gotten to know Larry Alexander pretty well. I used to help out at the Autorama model car contest. We liked to ask "celebrities" to pick their favorite model for a special award. One year Larry was under the weather so stayed home, and Mike Alexander made the pick. Mike walks up, he's on the phone with Larry. I said "Hi Mike". Mike asks my name. I say Kevin. Mike tells Larry it's Kevin. Mike pauses a moment then says "Larry says you're a nice guy". I was thrilled, and still am.

  17. I remember him from Winsdor Area S.R. Good memories hanging around with them especially the Motor State/ Windsor Area garage crawls.

I went on a few of those garage crawls and I was told I had a good time.

I’ve been hearing stories of this show for decades. Should make for a good thread.

didnt @hiboy32 drive his 32 in the snow from Omaha one year?

  23. I really need to make it up to this sometime. I only get to live vicariously through my younger brother that goes every year and sends me pics. These are from a few years back. He typically either takes his 54 Chevy or his 64 Riviera and sets up in the basement with his club.

I live just north of the D. Can you believe I've never been to Autorama? And how is it possible that I've only recently became aware of the basement?!

We were invited to bring our Roadster for this year, but she won't be ready in time.
But we'll be there to check out all the action, and hopefully the Roadster next year!
