History What do dislike about our hobby?

Well , you hit the scab on the sore spot now ! I was a member of a very well know club for a good many years . I really noticed a lot of criticizing a person and there car , because it wasn’t up to members standards . Damn It , to me it’s not about what your plastic can buy you . It’s about what you can afford and the FUN , of being in our hobby . My own car , probably could be built a damn sight better if I spent mega dollars to build it . I did what I could afford , and complete myself , and it is what it is to me , FUN , bottom line . I left that club like my head was on fire and my Azz was catchin !

I love almost everything about this hobby: the cars, the people, the craftsmanship. the competition, the friendships, the history and nostalgia, the performance, the driving, the collections, the racing, the shows. If there is anything I don't like, it would be cheaters, thiefs, and liars. But that is the same inside and outside of the hobby. I also hate when I lose something that I need right now and have to spend hours of frustration searching for it. I once lost a piston pin circlip that must have launched all the way into outer space when I was installing it. I needed to get the motor done asap, so I had took a day off work to do it. I searched for 3 hours for that thing! I called about 10 shops, and no one local had one. Finally I had to call Diamond pistons and have one overnighted.

Fix'n rust even though I cut it out and weld new metal in. I've had my fill.

 

I’ll trade you all the block sanding you can handle for all the automotive wiring you need.

At the end of a block sanding job my fingers are bleeding, hands are cramped up, wrists are numb, elbows bitching, shoulders screaming, Boulder buggers, and my fucking shop with 5 semis full of shit everything in it is full of dust.

 

Then the dude getting the money should be paying the tax hummmmmmm

 

I'm never satisfied. I go to cruise nights and other gatherings and see something on someone else's car and I think that would be bitchin on mine. I'm constantly tearing stuff apart.

 

and he often does......depending on if it results in a profit, he is subject to income tax......

 

Not a Damned thing!

 

I hate the way I feel after a long but productive day in the shop. Today, made body patches, made a seat frame, welded and ground it all, get down on the floor, get up.....every time harder than the time before, my arms hurt, my back hurts, my ears are ringing, but......looked at the progress, the pretty nice welds with the blue shadow all round them, the happy face of my helper......Life is good.

 

Hearing everyone give me crap about grease under my nails.

The only thing I can think of right now is the cost and the lack of older cars in the junkyards.

Actually dropped a alternator small bolt today close to dust - went just farther than an arm's reach - so I had to belly down towards the tranny....but why....that's a good roll !

 

Folks griping about someone else’s car or build.

 

Honestly-
All of the "reality" TV shows that have not only shot our hobby price ways into the stratosphere, but have made it seem that the 1-800-HOT-ROD! aftermarket suppliers have all of the answers and that with their tech "specialists", it is so easy!

That unfinished rides are the way to go. Unless it really is a survivor, rescue it and make it yours.

You can hit type in any craigslist search and be blessed with a '87 Caprice moredoor that is sooo bitchin' with patina and is ol' skool.

The term Old School.

That car clubs, at least what I have seen here in the PNW, consist of t shirts with their logo, jackets with the same and wannabe's calling themselves "prospects". And out of the club only 4 out of the 15 , including the president have a running or driving car or truck!

Lack of good junk yards and the infiltration of rat rods into the hobby.

 

In no particular order because at any given time one may gripe my ass more than another.
Favoritism
Bullshitters that somehow have a following
Thinking that you mocked up every part needed but during final assembly you realize you forgot a couple
Forums where post counts somehow hold a person in higher standards
Clutch head screws/bolts
People that can't think past a single parts supplier's catalog
Moderators that use their position for their own personal agenda
When recommended parts don't fit after waiting a week for them to arrive
I'm in rare form but I think I'll stop now..lol

 

How when it all started we were rebels and nobody was going to tell us what we could do.
Now in order to fit in, we have a lot of people who can tell us what we can do.

 

I hate nothing about the hobby. What I hate is arthritis. It makes me hate doing things, some days. But, it ain't the car or tool's fault. I'll drive hot rods and modified cars until that last ride in the stock, late model hearse.

 

I have to say, sanding, body work, paint, and paint prep are the worst, probably because that is what I'm doing right now. I hate how the dust covers everything in the shop. It takes months after I do body work to get everything cleaned back up.

I also need to add working on nearly anything under the car. I don't have a hoist, and can't put one in my shop. That means I get to jack up one end of everything and put it on jack stands, then move to the other end of the car and do it again. Then, even after I get it as high as I can, its still not high enough. I really don't think my fat belly would have anything to do with that.....Gene

 

Exactly this! If you don't like someones car, just go to the next thread. Calling someones car or work ugly is just low life crass. You don't have to be an a-hole. Some people have zero class. And as swade41 said "Bullshitters that somehow have a following"

 

Well I kinda like sanding, wet sanding, and polishing. A little zen like and pretty quick gratification. I hate when I think I've solved a problem and something still doesn't work, having too much "valuable" stuff that my shop is way too cluttered but those things will end up on a car sooner or later, little problems that take way too long to figure out a very simple solution, arrogant pricks that know everything but never offer to assist, and time that seems to disappear. Perhaps more later...

But I love solving problems, the sense of accomplishment after doing a job, the cool designs of the older vehicles, being "fortunate" and having what I have, seeing a rod or custom or restored vehichle at a show or driving by, the hope that I know my projects will be finished eventually, the HAMB, and probably a whole lot more.

 

Being well over 70 & not physically able to work using a floor jack & stands any longer.
