I bet you can turn goat piss into gasoline! Every build you post here is beyond impressive, turning parts most builders would scrap into awesome cars.

 

I don't know... I think that perfectly metal-finished & cleared on the outside, w/all the welds showing the seams & patching on the inside, would cause a whole lot of folks to either be speechless or walk away mumbling to themselves for a very long time... . Esp when everything else was finished properly in paint/chrome.

Thanks Marcus, I love a clear coated raw car. The whole time I have been thinking about this car I have pictured it in a navy blue with all of the chassis a light grey. We will see what it turns into. I kinda like the car to “ build itself “ and evolve as it grows.

So why the tube frame? Why not a traditional set of rails? Are you building it to pass a sanctioned inspection or just for the salt flat look?

I’m building it entirely out of junk that I have. The tubing is left overs from a tube chassis Willy’s aero that I helped on. For a front end I will be using a dodge wavy axle that I found on my property. Rear end is out of a 1969 ford truck that a friend rolled. Motor is a 327 that I bought for another project and never used, trans is a power glide that I never got around to taking to a swap meet. My goal is a wild ride that runs hard and cost less than 50000$ to build. All of this with a finished look and a quality build.

 

I like this kind of build, and why I haven't seen this thread till today is beyond me. I'm going to have to pay more attention! I'm in for the ride.

Side window height is 6 1/4 inches, as is the windshield. Back glass is 4 1/2.

 

Front end work. Took a bent up 40 ford front axle and cut the spring perch mounts from it, machined them to fit the wavy axle. Tacked them on for now, I’ll heat the axle and weld them hard when I get it all as it should be. A lot of work, but I think the wavy axle has a look that I want and it was all junk, so it fits my build.

Your axle idea is brilliant. I have never seen one done that way. It surely is the best way to get the spring behind the axle that I have seen yet. I have always been nervous of guys simply drilling horizonal holes in the bones and about mounting perches in shear but this totally eliminates that. And its a new way to tackle mating that Mopar axle to a Ford spring. Cool!

 

Thanks. This is the second one I did like this. The other axle was a tube from an old sprint car that I put under my model a coupe. It worked real well , so I did it the same way on this one. Just need to make sure that your weld is hot, that’s a lot of steel there to melt together., but the original axle is a really nice forging and the tube axle is so thick, I’m real happy with how they come together.

 

I think I’m gonna use that idea because it’s s damn good one!
Just Gotta find a trashed axle to cut donor parts from.

 

Jim, that really is a great idea. I have a model A axle that a guy cut up with a torch, but the perch holes are fine I couldn't toss it. Now I think I know what to do with it since I have a couple wavy axles. You do realize you've probably raised the prices on 4 door 57 Buicks now don't you.

 

The roof really fit perfectly. I think the curve is even there to repair above the rear window area on a 34 that’s been smashed, I mean it fit that good.
