I got given two Slick 4 cylinder impulse mags a few years ago by a mate who's dad used to inspect aero parts. they have exceeded their air hours but both put out a great spark. Just wondering if anyone has used them on their car. Im thinking of trying one on my Model T with a chain drive from the crank but would love to see what others might have done
Don’t know about setting them up , and you may of thought of it yourself, but that being set up as a plug in and tang drive, the shaft bearing may not handle the side loading of a chain drive. Just a thought.
Does that mag have a impulse to help starting?. I bought a fordson tractor year's ago that had a Fairbanks Morse mag added to replace the model t style original ignition. It was an aftermarket gear drive set up. How about a cogged flat belt?
You will have to make a jack shaft to drive it. Mag drives are universal, meaning the slotted drive slows various brands interchange. So you can use the drive off a ihc, Allis Chalmers, tractor as a source of drive parts. Gotta be plenty of junk Farmall tractors!!!
Yes its got an impulse drive coupling. I was thinking of a jackshaft set up with a slot in the sprocket boss at the mag side to drive the impulse coupling and fabricate a plate with a clamp to hold the mag up to it and allow for accurate timing adjustment
Basic info for internal timing on an aircraft mag. https://www.flight-mechanic.com/checking-the-internal-timing-of-a-magneto/ As mentioned, your most difficult problem will be mounting/install. Once installed, you can time it with a buzz box and degree wheel. Normally these are set up in aircraft with 2 plug per cylinder, so you if you're running on a V8 you'll have to figure out the firing order and drive mechanisms to make sure you've got spark sorted to work with the engine. They usually run in parallel on aircraft with a matched gear set.
Lots of info. and manuals on the internet for Slick mags, you'll need to know the model number to get the right stuff. Pretty easy to work on but parts will be pricey if you need anything...
don't forget when timing a mag with impulse, it has to be something like 30* advance so it trips at the tdc
