Projects 33 Plymouth PC Coupe project

Figured this would be a good forum to join and document my project, as well as gain some knowledge. So here goes.......

Drug this 33 PC coupe home earlier this week after a thousand mile round trip. Completely disassembled. Previous owner passed and I bought it from his widow. Got it home and propped everything up to get a look at it. Most of it is there, and in usable shape. It’s missing the gas tank cover, needs the rear filler panel patched or replaced, and the bottom 6 inches of the inner trunk lid structure needs rebuilding. It’s had a stock style mustang II installed in the front, as well as a 4 link disc brake ford 8.8 rear, though both of those may need some redoing.

Still deciding on the long term vision/plan for it. But looking forward to the project. It came with a fresh rebuilt 318 still on the stand, with trans. But I have a 440 I just swapped out of my cuda that may end up in it.

I’m definitely missing a few things, which I’m hoping I may find from members here. So if anyone has some 33 Plymouth parts stashed, speak up, lol.

Yes, same car. It’s fairly solid, but does need some work in several places. And several things the previous owner repaired, are gonna have to be redone.

Definitely will be mopar powered. No sbc in this one......

 

Thanks for the replies, guys. I’ve wanted one of these for 30 years. This one popped up on facebook last week, so I made the drive to see it, then haggled and brought it home.

I’m still trying to figure out what’s missing and what’s there. It’s tough when you aren’t the one that takes it apart. I can’t do much with it right now. I need to build a new garage/carport to put my cuda in, so I can put this one in the shop. I’ve never messed with something this old. I’ll be leaning on others and doing a lot of reading to figure some things out.

Very nice find. If this is your first project rod, don't be tempted to blow it completely apart. Tackle one area at a time and repair or change. The best way to get discouraged is to see a bunch of parts laying around. Take it from so many of us who did it years ago.

 

It’s already blown apart, lol. It’s completely disassembled. Formulating a plan for it though......

 

Need to get this hunk of junk on some level ground and start figuring out where I’m gonna start. I think the first thing I’m gonna do, is figure out the stance I want, ride height, tire size, etc. I don’t really know what direction the previous owner was going with it.

I’m not sure I’m a fan of the way he did the rear suspension. The forward mounts for the four link are mighty low, and the bars angle down. Panhard bar isn’t level the way it currently sits either. Both of those should be easy enough to fix with some new brackets.

Not sure what to think about the front end. At the minimum, it needs to be rewelded. I need to get the fenders and all mocked up where they go to see if I’m even gonna/can use it. The track width seems too wide to me at first glance. I want the car to sit down, and I don’t think there’s enough clearance in the outside of the fenders to turn the wheels as is. I was gonna measure it, but threw my damn back out while moving some junk in the yard. Since all the original brackets and stuff were removed from the frame, I’ve also gotta figure out how I’m gonna remount the fender supports and everything else too.

Gonna start trying to find some pics of other old Plymouths and check out tire sizes, stances, etc, to see where I’d like to end up. If anyone reading this has one, please post up some pics.

 

you got some good and not so good going on
the ends or the rails are boxed and some store bought suspension pieces
get the car on some level ground and start measuring
the body needs to be bolted down to check if you like how it all sits. Those cars have wooden sub-rails under the body.
then start checking the squareness of the frame and suspension mounting
you need to set it up with the size wheels and tires you want to run, then modify from there.
Im not a big fan of how that 4 bar set up is either but you need to establish your ride height before modifying.

I’ve got one of the wood pieces. Once I get it where I can mock it up right, I figured I’d try and copy this one, or use it for measurements and make some temporary spacers. Did you just use to rectangle tubing to make those? Not being the one that took this thing apart kinda sucks, since I have to figure out how it goes back together with little to no reference.

 

Look REALLY close in order to see the original engine number stamped on that Plymouth frame rail....left side in the photo. It ACTUALLY looks like it is a PD not a PC unless I am seeing it wrong....

 

I used 3 x 1.5 rectangle tubing
sliced and diced to resemble the wood
the inside step for the wood floor wasnt needed

I also made a steel support for the body behind the seat
It fit behind the interior, it was kinda like a mini roll bar. Stiffened up the body a lot

You said You had a 440 but an early Hemi would look fantastic

 

It would look great! Lol. But I’m gonna try to do this on a budget and use what I have or can make as much as possible. Plus, I wanna run the hood sides, and I’m pretty sure the early Hemis won’t allow that.

 

We weren’t able to run a hood on the one I helped build.
That 440 is gonna be tight.
