The smudges are on the building and the bus, I think it's just the overall condition of the photo.

    The list of incidents:

    • August 1941: Petillo is charged with felonious assault on an L.A. police officer who had responded to a disturbance complaint at his Hollywood nightclub. The charges were dropped days later.
    • April 12, 1942: Petillo, while driving drunk, crashed into a moving tanker train.
    • July 16, 1943: Valentine Petillo, his wife of 19 years, sued for divorce on the grounds of physical and mental cruelty.
    • 1945: Anna Grimet, a dancer at his nightclub claims she resisted Petillo's advances and was beaten in the face. Petillo was arrested on assault charges.
    • July 1, 1945: Petillo tried to eject two Marines who refused to leave his nightclub. One received a beating with a barstool and Petillo fired a rifle to chase them out of the bar. Petillo was indicated on a list of charges that include assault with intent to commit murder.
    • November 1945: Petillo and business associate James Theriae, were charged with the attempted rape of Marie Cooper. Cooper claimed the men offered her a car ride, drove to a deserted street and attacked her. The charges were dropped when she failed to appear in court.
    • June 28, 1948: Petillo visited the Hotel Roosevelt in Indianapolis at 2 a.m. and allegedly registered under the name "Joe Meio." Naomi Shofner, who was Petillo's former secretary and girlfriend, said he lured her into his hotel room under the pretext of "seeing an old friend." The bellhop testified he heard her say "Kelly, please let me out of here" and then heard a scream. He broke into the room where he found Naomi, who had been cut from her left ear to her mouth. She survived the attack and an arrest warrant on the charge of assault with the intent to commit murder was issued for Kelly Petillo.

That time Indy 500 drivers were pot smugglers

After an extensive manhunt, Petillo was arrested on July 5, 1948, in victory lane at Owosso Motor Speedway in Michigan after winning the 100-lap midget feature. Petillo was convicted on Jan 19, 1949, and sentenced to 10 years in the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City and released on parole in 1955.

Petillo didn't learn his lesson. He skipped parole and went "on the lam" for over a year before being captured May 22, 1957, on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Petillo was returned to the Indiana State Prison until 1959.

“I'm going to wipe that record of mine clean. I'm not mad at anybody. I want to get back to racing.”

    Petillo
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway denied Petillo entry into the 1959 and 1960 Indianapolis 500's citing his age as the reason for rejection and Petillo filed a lawsuit against the Speedway, but the lawsuit was dismissed.

Petillo had been scorned by the site of his greatest glory.

Kelly Petillo died from emphysema in Los Angeles on June 30, 1970. Despite his brushes with the law, Petillo was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2009.
