Still working away on the Jimmy 302 head.

Valve guides were dirty again. I had gotten a Pferd valve guide brush for this cleaning and I chucked it in the drill and went after the first valve guide. It screwed itself down into the guide and twisted off. Damnation! Took me twenty minutes to get it out. Went back to my gun-cleaning kit and Hoppes #9 solvent for this task, the only difference being that I chucked the gun-cleaning brush in the drill.

Chucked a valve-lapping tool into the drill next and lapped the valves with Permatex Rebuilders Aid Valve Grind Compound. I lapped them all even though the ones Yanni did three years ago didn't need any more than a cleaning pass. The specialized lapping tool in the drill was much preferred to the manual fire stick method.

Cleaned the valve guides again to remove any remains of grinding compound that might have gotten in.

Working towards to finish line on the Jimmy 302 head.

Installed the intake valves as follows. Installed the base shim cup. Installed the garter type valve seal. Slathered the valve stem with assembly lube and installed. it. Install the spring and retainer and compressed it. Install the o-ring on the valve stem followed by the keepers. I used a dab of bearing grease on the keepers to hold them in place. Slowly release the spring compressor and Bob's your uncle.

A few snags were that the cheap valve spring compressor I purchased required a John Armstrong to work and I didn't have the strength for it. I had to revert to the palm-bruising wheel of torture device. Also, I didn't have the correct valve seals to fit the exhaust valves and I have to set about crafting the correct intarweb search term to find the required umbrella type seals.

 

Those are mighty tall stake sides; what ya hauling?

 

Closed up some holes in the floor, not the way I prefer, but closed up for the time being. Still waiting for my trunk lock cylinder to come in. Little victories

Went to see a friend who has some project cars he would like for me to sell....1928 Model A coupe, two 1929 Chevrolet sedans and a built Ford V8....now I just have to figure out what they are worth in order to sell....

 

Wow....that's a built flattie ! Actually got disgusted with a original never rebuilt carb I tor down off the old Dodge van....and went to my parts bin and bulled out the "rebuilt carb" that came on the poly 318 when I bought the old station wagon.... which never ran right so I yanked it off....after I opened it up - I made the right adjustments.....and installed it on the old Dodge van I picked up......stay tuned and lock up your daughters !

 

I irritated some nerves, getting the hot flashes in the buttocks when I bend over, which ain't to bad considering the temps are plummeting around here.
The cause of the nerve flare up is making this discrete fuel regulator bracket, onward and forward to a different alternator bracket next.

 

I’m jumping from project to project. Yesterday I got the floor welded back into my ‘33 pu cab. Today I turned it 180 in the shop (not an easy task in itself) and installed the 425 Nailhead/TH400. Fits nice. Ready to make motor mounts.

Put up a small tree.....I really like it....

 

Put up my tree last night.

 

Sitting here in a cold house trying to figure out what to do next,fairly new furnace quit while at work and could not get a hold of the guy who installed it. Its about 7 years old and had someone install it on the side and now thinking that might have not been the greatest idea.

 

Jeff, change the batteries in your thermostat?

 

Looks like there was a sale on clamps and I missed out!

 

Got tired of the cold and Central Missouri and drove to Florida to hang out on the beach! 73 degrees and Floridians are turning the heat on and digging their coats out of the closet. Looks like a perfect day to go out on the beach looked abandoned! Got my grill shell for my 31 Chevy from a guy in Knoxville named Alex off the H.A.M.B.

 

Had to move my Chevy coupe so figured I might as well run it around the block.
Things went great until I wound it up and it didn't shift out of first!!
Tried to get it to shift a couple more times as I limped around the block but no luck.
Bought a new modulator and put it on tonight and replaced a portion of the vacuum line.
I'll test it in the morning. I don't know why it might have failed... it has worked great for well over 30 years!!
Cross your fingers.

 

That was the first thing I done and nothing,turned out the person I had install my furnace did not install the correct thermostat and did a rig to get it to work that made it go wonky and not work,it was installed 12 years ago and the problem finally showed up.

 

Done with the Jimmy 302 head work.

At the Tijuana Taxi Sunday afternoon cruise-in, John Carey gave me some valve seals that might work on the exhaust valve guides. He also lent me his spring compressor. I have ordered umbrella seals and they are on their way but I can see nothing wrong with the seals John gave me and I started installing them. If they don't work, I can install the umbrella seals. The one redeeming feature of the palm-bruising wheel of torture compressor is that the springs can be removed with the head still on the block.

In the meantime, John's spring compressor worked great and I was done in short time using the same procedure I used for the intake valves. The keepers in three of the springs didn't look quite seated when I took the picture so I redid them with the wheel of torture.

Time to mist and wipe down the bare metal surfaces with Marvel Mystery Oil, Seran Wrap it and hoist the head down unto a furniture dolly for storage until that time when it goes back on the engine. Beer of the day is Wild Ride Brewing's Brenna A Amber Lager.

All I got done was drive to Cuba, MO, to retrieve my newly chromed bumpers for my '54 Dodge pickup. It was a leisurely 394 mile round trip drive.

 

Just got done smoking a 25lb. batch of deer summer sausage.

Hope you mend up fast Lloyd.........wrestled a fuel pump on the old 318....wasn't that bad....then the decision to cut or not the original fuel line (which had been bent as much as it could) or strip the new pump's thread's....cut won...and hope to have it running a while tomorrow off a small tank.....
