Those are not Halibrand. They are E-T mags. E-T III to be precise. Also you have the wrong type washers in them. They should be an oval and fit tight into the wheel. Check ebay under E-T mags for correct washers and lug nuts before anything bad happens to the wheels or your car.

I thought these were pretty cool. These 21" wheels were on the back of a 29 DeSoto Roadster at the Nugget Casino during Bonneville speed week this year.

 

I have the magnesium cover plates (undrilled), too. I haven't decided if I'm going to drill and run them, yet.

 

Back up for further consideration.

Anyone know the origins of these? Two 15x9.5 and one 15x8.5 (the 8.5 is the only one with "mongoose" cast into it. 6 pin knockoffs. Been all over the place trying to learn about them. May sell em, may build a display case for them.

 

I absolutely love them. Is there a better wheel? I think not.

For some reason when I build a car it's always rolling around in my head that it'll need 'Brands on it at some point. Getting ready to give them a shot on the cabinet.

There was never any real choice on my Roadster. Even though they are Real Rodder copies of smoothies, and the '54 well that's because when I built it I was in a different spot and if I was gonna build a nice car it was going to have them. That was over 20 years ago now. The last picture is the only real set of Smoothies I've ever owned.

Sure there's lots of great wheels, I like many but there's only one that gets everybody going.

When a car gets Halibrands it just means you love it a little more.

 

Scored these recently and was wondering where I can get 6 pin centerlock adapters to fit Early Ford Hubs. I'm squirreling them away for a "someday" project and I'd just like to start looking for the parts to mount them up to a car ahead of time. I'd like to put 2 on the rear of something!

 

I was very pleased when we got these old Halibrand wheels in to our shop.
They belong to a -70,s Swedish Funny Car called Ragnarök.These are the roughest castings I´ve ever seen on a wheel.

If it was me, I'd look for special 6-pin hubs - maybe even talk to Boling Brothers and see if it is possible to buy hubs that have not been drilled. Maybe you can drill a set of hubs? What I don't know is the center opening of the wheel - will it fit the diameter of the standard Ford hubs? The think I hate about adapters is that the wheel is moved out (offset) about an 1" to the outside. Always looks funny to me and can screw with the steering/handling of the car.

 

You may need custom adapters, not sure what you are doing.
Used Halibrand pressure plates are on that auction site regularly.
Keep in mind, this stuff has gotten expensive whether new or used.

This is how we handled the issue. Found some old dirt car 6 pin hubs, redrilled the Ford drums, mounted the hubs using the pins nutted on the inside of the drums. Works on the front also using ford drums. Will not work with early Lincoln drums on the front.

 

There is also some machining to do to make sure everything is centered and secure

 

I'd like to run them on the rear only on an early Ford Drum/hub. They should fit over the hub/snout ok I think for a banjo rear drum. I've heard of using the old dirt car hubs before as a basis. Boling Bros is a good idea too!

I only want to run them on the rear, so this is a good idea. Glad to hear from someone that has actually done it! What machine work did you do? I guess I need to call around some of the old dirt racers in the area and see who has some 6 pin hubs! Thanks!

When you are asking around ask for the hubs from a tapered rear end not a splined rear.

 

Wonder if the 8.5 is actually off one of them. Very interesting. Thank you for the info.

 

A couple cuts on the lathe on the drums and hubs to create a centering ridge when mating the hub to drum. Probably overkill but I felt it would relieve some stress from just using the pins for centering. Works good, I've used it on a couple cars.
