Interesting nose on this car. I've never seen a "broken" (that is...not roll formed) skin on a dragster. This seems to have four bends (top piece) in it to fit the chassis, rather than being radiused. Note the cowl piece has been radiused as most are.

Might have had something to do with the skill set of the tin man. The short cowl was much easier to roll than the nose.
On the other hand the Roth/Schreiver Yellow Fang used angles as a styling statement.

Photo from a Hot Rod piece on safety...according to the caption, the driver survived because of the roll bar. It wouldn't pass tech today, but in the '50s it was pretty good.

I always worried about rear-end explosions in these frame configurations.

It's funny now, but I sat astride a Ford banjo and never worried about it...probably I should have, but we believed we were bullet-proof back then.

Sims, Randall, and McClure Crosley modified, running a flathead, at the SCTA meet at Colton, 1955. This was an Oceanside Oilers car, same club that Dode Martin and Jim Nelson of Dragmaster fame, belonged to. Note the nose of Harry Duncan's "Jitterbug" coupe in the background.

Merek Chertkow in Ed Taylor's blown Olds modified roadster. This car was strong enough to beat top fuelers in its day. Merek went on to drive other top fuel cars, including serving a stint at the helm of the Ramchargers top fuel car. He is doing well in Utah these days, and has lots of memories to share.

A shame Merek didn't keep posting here, thanks to a few fools voicing their moronic opinions about that very cool street car he built.

  19. Yes, Merek knows his stuff. Few people know when Ed parked his roadster, Merek was chosen to pilot the Ram Chargers funny car as well as their top fuler. Merek and I became friends when he realized I knew Ed Taylor. He designed his own fuel system for his "street comp coupe". The blown Chevy fires right up just like a docile street engine because Merek designed a self priming system for the Hilborne 4 holer.

I've straddled a big Olds/Pontiac and a Mopar 8-3/4" for a couple fun run squirts a long time ago, but that legs under stuff, I don't think so !
