What? What you say??? Sad to admit, I hadn't noticed they sunk the back of the top and kept the stock rear window. That is why the fins are so kool. DOH!!!!

The HAMB is so kool you can learn something everyday. Thanks for the lesson.

Don't be embarrassed. I'd wager most have missed this.
These pics (from Kustomrama) tell the rest of the story.
In the Sixties, Bill sold the original Bat, and continued to customize it for the new owner. At some point, that beautiful top was severed for a bubble, but the project was abandoned.

Later still, the Bat was purchased off of Craigslist, with a stock top installed. You can see the lowered trunk in this photo.

Speaking of the Sixties, Hines was sure into bending some round rod at that time, as well as some minds.
"Lately it occurs to me...What a long, strange trip it's been!" (Thank you, Owsley.)

Hines' similarly styled "Maharaja" '56 Ford.

  3. Custom Rodder did a multi part build series on Bill building the Bat Clone.

  4. Well that was some wild styling. Kind of one of the dark sides of the mid 60's was how over to the top crazy the mods went. A lot of really beautiful customs fell into this trap. Really glad Taboo did not go this route.

Mickey I love it when the odd photo of the Hudson appears from our trip with the car over in USA in 2018. Brings back some good memories and maybe a repeat visit in 2021.
This photo is at Santa Maria 2018. We had done over 6000 miles at this stage and ready to go home by then.

It is a beautiful car! The first time I saw a step-down Hudson was at a car show with my Dad circa 1983 or so. I walked around it 3 or 4 times and said That would make a spectacular kustom!
Your car proves I was right.

That little car is so Kool..I was just looking at these little things earlier..they are amazing.
I'm posting some of the other one's, I hope these are not what wicarnut just posted earlier, I can't tell his posted pics come across as big red x's on my device, so if they are I'm sorry for posting them again. 15742296621176826495828227977311.jpeg 15742298062017314199173017470885.jpeg 15742294400703706282503930755272.jpeg 15742293777003976073657758399472.jpeg 15742296370778198726006340384443.jpeg 15742293221661768037378065674463.jpeg 15742292925777051963934901298982.jpeg 15742291606763143576952553426489.jpeg

Really like this. Reminds me of Terry Cook's Zephyrs, starting, of course,, with Scrape!

  17. Thanks for posting this awesome '55 @loudbang! It's one of my favorites! One thing I've always wondered about this car is the owner/builder did a lot of amazing custom work including a nice chop, molded grille shell with a 'Vette grille as well as a long laundry list of other mods, yet they left the door handles on. Don't understand that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not disrespecting this car one little bit, just making an observation. E

Lol, It was an honor to have the Hudson (and you) rolling all over the USA. I can't imagine how kool it felt cruising in a kustom all over a foreign country. You were Blessed. It would be kool to have ya back.

    The year I graduated H.S
Do you know if that convert is still alive, I really liked that one also.
Hard to tell from the picture but I believe it was green in color. 20191120_171205.jpeg 20191120_171252.jpeg

  25. Neat pictures you snapped! That's during the only time period I'm hazy on the cars history. That's when Ron Sweeny owned the car I believe, as the Cragar wheels were on the car only when he owned it to my knowledge, I only have one photo of the car with those wheels when it was on a car club run. He sold it to the person who my grandfather bought it from the first time.

The convertible is still around somewhere. That was Ron Hing's 56. It was a emerald green for most of its life. Somewhere in the mid 2000's Ron sold it and the car had a engine fire that burnt the nose pretty bad. The car was restored and was painted a metallic orange. I'm not sure though if its still in Oregon or not. I don't know who currently owns the car.
