Today I bought a Borg Warner T5 manual transmission for a one day swap into my 36 Ford Coupe with an 8BA Flathead. The tag on the case says 1352-042. I found it on Craigslist about 100 miles away for $260.00. I bought it the same day as is. The numbers tell me it is from a 1984-85 S10 with a 2.8 V6 and a 5 speed. It has a mechanical speedometer. Here is my question. I think it was a great buy but do they have any common problems?? It shifts great and feels tight. I’m not sure I will rebuild it. Anyone been down this road?? Stick a tail shaft seal in it while it's on the bench... Then stick it in and and run it. I installed mine in a couple hours...
Chevy had a bulletin out on the noisy input shaft bearing or gear . I remember it fixed the customers complaint . Can't remember what it was , maybe a spring loaded spacer that went in front of the input gear to keep a constant pressure on the gear .
1st gear is pretty low.I start in 2nd with ease. They make shifters that give them a smaller shift pattern.I made my shifter lever from a shot out Enfield rifle barrel. Its marked 1917.It has a nice taper.I put the shift knob on a 6 inch piece of all thread, and pushed it in the bore. Looks like a 1930 shifter. While its out cut the "fin" off the bottom of the case for clearance.

HEY, that's my transmission! All I did was open it up to inspect, and replace the seals. New lube also. Still working fine, but I don't beat on it...
I did just that. Bought a S10 T5 for my '35 slantback. I received it and installed it as is. The only issue I had was it popped out of second gear.
I have a 1938 Dodge coupe. What bellhousing and clutch disc did you use for your 5 speed conversion? Sent from my LG-H830 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It mounts to the original bell housing after drilling and tapping. Still using an original pressure plate assembly, but I opted for a custom clutch disc only because I wanted to keep the original clutch diameter. I hear many have used smaller off the shelf clutch discs without issue. There is a lot of info at P15D24 website about T5 installs in early Mopar cars.
Yep, but remember to use Dexron II for lube....that is what I am told and what I use, and what the book says. I paid $240 years ago on a gamble, paid $80 to have the guy tell me it was like new. The seller said it jumped out of gear, and after he got another one, same thing, the cause was shifter hitting the firewall during some engine movement, either under accel or decell, I can't recall. My good luck!
That's the best one to use. Mechanical speedos are hard to find anymore. You will need an adapter plate and truck hog's head to bolt it all up. Check the input shaft bearing for excess play. Now is the time to change it. I love mine. Works great.
Don't forget to trim 1/4 inch off the input shaft where it goes into the pilot bearing as its too long, it will mess up your thrust on a Flathead, learned that the hard way in '32 Coupe.
I sacrificed a swan neck shifter and pinned/welded it to the S-10 base so it look stock and used stock sift knob.
I had a WC S10 trans behind my 5" chopped 3 w (sold). I ran it with a Winters QC at Maxton & ran 120 w/ no problems. All that with a 9.5" disc ...just don't speed shift it.
I have a late s-10 the owners manual says synchromesh , not sure differences on transmissions , I know the earlier ones did use atf
I've got a twin to yours for my 31 A with flathead. Dwight Bond adapter that I bought the extra pieces he suggested and what was probably the last Astro Van clutch disk that Rock Auto had in stock. They work fine if you don't run massive horse power or beat the crap out of them.
