Not only was the Davis and Ingram Fiat purple, but they won "Best Appearing Crew" at the Nationals, sporting matching purple team shirts.

30 years ago I restored a chopped 40 Ford custom PU for a customer who wanted it painted purple. He told me that's what color it was when I drove it to high school in the early 50's and I want it that way again. Purple with a Mauve leather interior. The color we used was a Cuda/Challenger color.

  15. In reference to the thread title question, I think it's safe to say purple is pretty damn "period correct" regardless of what period is in question. Purple lends itself best to metallics so that pins the "period" down to when metallics were first available until today. That's a pretty long span of time. I'm not saying flat purples weren't used at all; I'm sure they were and will be.
Personally, I associate the color with custom paint jobs and any factory availability as mere historical footnotes.

I knew that this car would be Purple when I started on it. The color is based off of 1973 Harley Sunburst purple. We sprayed some samples and checked it in the dark because I did not want it to look black then. We lightened it up some and added some more flake. I personally like it. Gary P8240001.JPG

I’ve always liked purple but never had the balls to put it on any of my cars.

    I love that...
Always loved purple as a kid, and so purple was one of the color options I had thought about for doing my 3w deuce, but just couldn't think of an appropriate colour to do the interior, as the default white interior option is not something that floats my boat.

Purple on a hot rod is a lot like green on a hot rod... it's hard to get right. The examples of cars with a color that looks a bit "off" outnumber the ones that ones that look right.

    Or Mary:rolleyes:
I've been known to go "yuck" when seeing some cars painted purple but when it's right for the car.......it's real right!
When I was about 16 or 17 an older friend let me drive his PURPLE 55 T-bird a few times, it had a real hot 312/T-10, man, I thought I was hot s#/t.

How about the famous '"Glass Slipper" fiberglas-bodied rail?
It was selected as "America's Most Beautiful Competition Car" at Oakland, back in 1957!
