I just got a 1957 Chevy with 17,000 miles on it. Any other good old rides out there with low mileage? IMG_0624.JPG

    Wow, wow and wow!

I make it a point to only buy cars that have been driven into the ground.

My 31 Buick I got in 09 had 17,000 and change, had sat in a garage in Carmel from 56 to 85, and then in the Sierras til I got it. All my Studebakers seen to have died at 65 to 68 thousand miles.

I inherited this 64 Caddy in 2012. The dash shows the odometer reading after it came off the truck

WOW...those cars are AMAZING ! ! ! Hard to believe cars like these still exist.

Most of the "lovelies" (junk:eek:) I've owned or built either came with no speedo/odometer, or the odometer numbers were faded beyond readability,:D

I like low mileage cars for the physical condition they are in. Remember most older cars were used up by 100,000 miles. The flip side is stuff that sits unused often doesn't fare well and can be problematic.

  14. Recently I’ve had two Chevrolet’s the same year but slightly OT for here. Both had right at 60,000. One had been heavily modified and was an awesome car, the low miles showed in the details. The other was unmodified but surprisingly the details weren’t very good, all the rubber was deteriorated. It seemed like every time I drove it something had to be done to it. To me low mileage on a car that is over 50 years old doesn’t mean much.

In the mid 80's I was given an old VW by a co-worker who I helped move. When I went to the barn it was in I found it was a 64 Karmen Guia with 20,000 original miles. She literally drove it to church on Sundays, then parked it when the battery died. It was a demo she bought with 3000 miles on it. Sold it for enough to build a garage at my first house.

My old 54 Chieftain Special had 37,000 miles on it. All original car with the exception of the 58 Pontiac caps and I lowered it 3".

Another car I had - this 51 Pontiac police car. While not as low, it had 56,000 on it when I got it. Most of those miles put on it in the early-mid 1950's according to documentation I got with it. All original inside and out. It had all imitation leather interior that was not available in civilian sedans.

I also had a very rough 1953 Oldsmobile with around 10,000 miles on it. I bought it off the son of the original owner who said his dad bought it new and hated it. Drove it a few years and parked it up on a hill. I sold the 303 rocket engine to another HAMB member over 10 years ago.

Unless you are the original owner or you have documentation it's hard to tell if the miles are original or not. If you were a car dealer back in the 60's everyone was clipping the speedometer either to take to the auction or put on the used car lot. Some people rolled them back just to get more money on their trades. It was so easy any dummy could do it. Even people restoring an old car would turn back the odometer to zero. I guess that is why the states started using odometer statements when selling a new or used car so they had a paper trail.

  18. We bought a 64 galaxie 4 door. Great body & paint. Interior good also. 24,000 miles. always parked in a garage. when my wife was driving it home the head gasket blew between the head and block. sounded like a spark plug blew out. the low miles where from short hops. the engine,Trans , Starter , generator, Air cond where all shot. very poor mechanical cond. Pretty car baby blue. I swapped the 289 and installed a 302 and later FMX trans. better starter and alternator to boot. It was a 4 door. I sold it to a guy that used it to fix up a 2 dr htp. Lost money on that deal. My wifes OT Jeep Cherokee has way over 200,000 miles and is in much better condition than that low mile 64 ford was.

My 39 had 41,000 on it when I got it used up and long dead. I told my dad [born in 1930] it looked like 100 and 40k he said with dirt roads and lack of hwys that would be not possible and people didn’t travel that much. And it was common for cars to be used up by 50k. I got 1st car in 74 and you wouldn’t think of buying any over 100k

  20. My beater 66 GMC today only has about 62 thousand actual miles. the body is bent and rusted. Its a 6 with granny 4 speed and Dana 44 rear. Ive had to replace the entire fuel system from tank to carb. Entire brake system from master cyl to brake shoes and everything in between including the lines. all the wheel and axle bearings. steering sector. trans rear seal and front seal in the rear as well as the spider gears. water pump , radiator , alternator & starter. It even shed the outer ring from the front harmonic balancer. Had to replace the clutch and pressure plate. and outer tire rod ends & pitman arm. Even the shocks where leaking. I swapped to a HEI when I first got it going. I pulled the pan before I ever started it. cleaned the sludge fron it and the oil pum screen. changed to oil pretty often and added a FRANTZ oil cleaner. Yep low miles for me = Setting and Rotting. Ive been using & more doors 058.JPG more doors 059.JPG abusing the 66 GMC for 6 years. I aint afeared to load it. Today it has a good load on it. Ive been attempting to clean up & organize my hoard.

  22. I agree, Sitting means Rotting. I bought my 59 from the original owner with all the Dealer paper work and dealer maintenance records. It had 72K on the odometer at that time and had been parked since 1982. I bought it in 2002. Thought I really Scored at the price I paid knowing full well it needed some help. I've been building cars forever but still didn't fully understand just how big a Cliff I had just jumped off of. Service work soon shifted to Restoration work without actually Restoring the Car. I'm now in the thing 3 times what it's worth being it's not a true restoration and driving it anywhere anytime is not a problem, I just don't do it. The next owner is going to get one Hell of a deal watching the true market get softer every day. What this car needs is a Watson style paint job and a set of Astro Supremes and keep driving it (I just can't bring myself to do it). She's a survivor all right, a survivor with a huge amount of my Wallet stuck in it. Hay, Fun costs money right?

My 1947 Ford Coupe had only 20,625 original miles on it. It had been in storage for a long time! 1947 FORD 10.jpg

I can second the "sitting=rotting" deal in a lot of instances. Mine spent at least a decade sitting underneath a pine tree because the original owner lost interest in it due to carb issues. Someone rebuilt the carb, and had the primary and secondary jets reversed, so it ran like crap, and sucked gas like there was no tomorrow. All of the door and window seals could stand to be replaced, the rubber parts in the brake system have all been replaced, belts, hoses, and assorted other rubber bits, and on it goes. I have a buddy who has fallen in love with any low mileage '60's Chevy he finds, and I have to remind him that all of that stuff will need attention, even if Grandma only drove it to church on alternate Sundays, but stopped driving it 35 years ago. His latest find was a 23k mile '63 Impala SS, with a similar story, and a 283/PG combo, that he was going to give 20k for! It did not run, had a moldy interior, a failing headliner, and was so dirty one couldn't tell if it needed paint or not.

Grandads' "39 Chevrolet, he bought it new and my dad learned to drive on it.
It is low mileage for an 80 year old car that gets driven with just 107,287 miles...a testament to maintenance

  28. My '59 Ford had 80,964 on the clock when I got it. Truly the least miles of any old car I have ever bought. Outside of wrecked parts cars that met a fateful early end. But the old cars can really rack up some miles. My '65 Belair I drove for years, that had an estimated 290,000 on it.

I had an OT Chevy wagon, '84 vintage. Weird shit was breaking on that when it was up at 175,000 miles. The wiper transmission arms slowly broke one at a time, but I was always lucky to find them in the 'yards.

If it has been sitting for a long time I pass if it's a off brand or non popular model. It's most likely going to need every system refurbished.
If it's a popular vehicle it's buy to flip.
