Technical Turbine paint system for primer

Hi. I am working on my first restoration. I want to strip the paint off of the car and take care of all of the body work and priming. I will then take it somewhere to tell me what I messed up and to finish the final paint. My question is if a turbine hvlp system will be good enough for primer in my garage, or if I should get a compressor system. I was just worried about cost and space so that is why I was looking at the turbine systems

Doesn't answer your question but I would try and find a shop that will paint over someone else's work before I got too far along if you are not prepared to do the final paint yourself. Most shops will not do it. They have no way of knowing if what you did was right and it is their reputation on the line if it fails down the road.

I've never used a Turbine system, so no advice there. But consider the cost of it as a "specialty tool" that can only be used for one thing, versus the cost of a good compressor that can run your airtools needed while doing your prep work and run the gun you use to spray the car with. Consider a vertical standing compressor to take up less of a foot print in your garage/shop.

Also, I might add, when I was looking at Turbine systems, seems you are kinda stuck with the spray gun that works for that system-someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Budget36 has a point. The turbine system is pretty much a one trick pony whereas a good compressor does more.
I sprayed primer with my turbine setup with great results, first try. There is a thread on here that’s full of good info about systems, guns and tip sizes. Do a search.

As far as I’m concerned the turbine system is the only way to go.
Clean dry warm air and consistent pressure.
I used a 5 stage turbine and a Fuji turbine gun to paint my RPU single stage acrylic urethane.

By the time you get good with primer you will be good enough for final color. I've met professional painters... you'll be fine

 

Thinking of getting their unit, how many stages is yours ? Did you use a clear coat ?

I saw a 57 Belair that was painted black with a turbine paint system and it was really nice.
Thought about trying one out .

 

I've been interested in the turbine paint system for years. Never tried one but would like to. For me, it boils down to giving up the floor/shelf space. I value every square foot of space dearly. I realize that the unit is not large but I feel that it's not worth giving up the space for what I'm going to consider a luxury item. The compressor works fine.

 

I did my 1st paint job in the garage using TP tools turbine. You have to use their guns due to the fittings. I got major orange peel till I reduced the paint about 5 percent more then called for.
