Hot Rods Are louvers as popular today as they have been in the past?

I think they still are. Just not many folks having the tool and know how to do them correctly around here.

saw a post about water in the engine compartment. I had louvers on my daily never in a garage OT truck for 8 or 9 years and never had any issues and I kept the engine compartment pretty clean.

 

My feet use to get wetter than the engine with my 39 Convertible, the louvers in the hood didn't let water in unless I was stopped, then the rake allowed water in the louvers, but the cowl vent leaked more. HRP

 

I betting that other then people who frequent the HAMB most people ( even on other car sites) would not be able to tell you what a louver is. I like them and think they look great on earlier cars and race cars. Especially when they are functional rather then decorative.

 

I like louvers, yes they are a pita to color sand..but not every step to building a Hot Rod is a walk in the park.
Had a couple of cars I had louvers punched into.
I picked up this '41 Ford p/u hood, that already had the holes punched, for the price of the hood..it'll eventually go on another pickup project.

 

Seems like very little is popular anymore except everyone calling out the demise of the hobby,sad to see this sight turning into a opinionated bitch session,really MISS the old HAMB and yes one of my cars(32 three window) has many louvers on the hood and trunk.

 

Took quite a few guys to hold the cab in place while the louvers were punched.

 

Originally more for function then looking pretty.....not having an issue or need for them at the moment.

In my mind, it's the type of car, placement, and number of louvers that decide if I like them or not. Sometimes less is better, I don't care for louvered tops, hoods are fine along with some trunk lids. I remember reading one time that a louver would actually flow more air than a open hole, so that was how how louvered trunk lids came to be on race cars, getting the trapped air out of the car. I've seen cars that were punched with so many that it looked silly, not my cup of tea.

Only louvers on my car are the factory ones on the inner front fenders.

 

Common on land speed record cars, all the louvers helps to alleviate air pressure that tries to build up inside the cars. HRP

I have louvers but made the mistake of making my aluminum hood out of too thick material. Some of them tore a bit on the ends. Now has any restorer out there ever unlouvered a car?

In 1957, San Jose a white '56 Chevy Bel Air had 120 louvers in the deck lid! Hood had them, too. I was anxious to talk with the driver, did this Chevy run at the Lakes???

Caught up with him at the local drive-in, John's on Santa Clara St. It was the famous Swap Meet Jack, (Jack Stanley) and the Chev had NOT run at the lakes. But it had a fresh new 392 Chrysler Hemi in front of a 4 speed...(the car was ONE YEAR OLD!) The engine was brand new, across-the-counter from Normandin's Chrysler. Whew!

Von Franco striped a louver job at my shop...Now, a good striper can do consistent 'lines', even on louvers. But I've never seen any from start to finish that were as perfect as those lines. Look at some that are striped next time...look like a hundred worms that aren't even related!
Tommy the Greek was extreme in his consistency, the best I EVER saw.
He pinstriped a control line model airplane for me...(no louvers!) Crashed it in a month.

 

There are several styles of louvers but I honestly like the more rounded shape . HRP

 

Yeah, that's what I call old school louvers.
