Hot Rods Interesting License Plates

Is that with the extra screw holes?
That seems like a lot of money for a license plate.
You could almost buy a decent hot rod for that.

 

Probably a few more extra screw holes. As far as paying that kind of money for a plate do some research to find out what the Massachusetts plate with #1 goes for....

These are some Canadian plates -so are they only worth 75 cents to your dollar?

 

I'm way out of the loop.
Probably about 7-8 years ago I thought I would start collecting old plates, thinking it was an affordable hobby.
In that time frame I've noticed a huge increase in even mediocre plates.
"A day late and a dollar short".
Now I want to collect AFX slot car stuff, same thing, $5-10 cars are now $30-40 each.

There's been a few licence plate threads here through the years I've been making a nuisance of myself here.
I've posted these before, and I'm going to again.
In 2009, i met Al (Zapato) here, and he told me that the first thing he put louvers in, when he brought his louver press, was a licence plate. He told me, that when he found it, he would send it to me. Four years later, and true to his word, i received it.



Along the way, a social group here on the Hamb was started for us plate geeks. I made some great friends there, although it's quieter nowdays, it's still there, and needs some new blood.

Al sent me some great licence plates, before he passed.
This one is my rarest. Thanks Al, Rest In Peace.

Here's a few that I've picked up.

 

Here are my "interesting" plates.
The first two numbers on Iowa plates back then was the county designation. I live in county #64 so these 1933's are from my county. And I used to live in county #56 so the 1928 is also extra cool.

 

These are cool!

 

The best personalized number plate that I ever saw was in Long Beach CA, on a black, early '70s 'Vette roadster with a well dressed black guy driving it, the number plate read "NEGRO". Awesome.

 

or you suck a valve seat out of a head in Battle Mountain, NV in 1974. I have 26 plates on this roadster and trailer and that is a trailer tag.

The Zipper is registered as 1999 homebuilt. In order to get YOM plates, I used a 1927 plate and then ordered a current Colorado personalized plate with the same number.

 

PH is pronounced "F"!

 

I found this 32 plate when digging in my yard . Bet there's not to many tractor plates in Penna.

 

I use my old tags for garage art. Yeah, I keep everything. lol

 

A former customer of mine bought 2 boxes full of plates taken off a barn near Tulare California , that were used as shingles , He gave me quite a few sets ( matching plates ) most have tiny holes where they tacked them to the barn. The farmer he bought them from , said his Dad used to go to DMV office at the end of the year and buy the unsold plates from the year before and used them for shingles. some have concurrent numbering , Looking back I should have grabbed more but I still have quite a few good sets , some without the tack holes [

 

Still registered since 1988.

 

Probably not very interesting is my plate "collection" that consists of three YOM plates on three vehicles.

And even less interesting is my collection of 1937 license plates. I still need eight US and 3 Canadian plates.

 

I run an original 55 Maryland plate on my 55, so that's kinda neat.



Not plate related, but numbers on your ride related:
Several years ago I built myself a cafe racer style bike out of a 1981 Suzuki GS. I put roundels on it with the number 81, since that was the year of the bike. Totally didn't occur to me until an "associate" of a certain motorcycle club clued me in. He was super cool about it, but he said some of his brothers likely wouldn't be. I changed them out for some 59s.

 

I was told by my license plate collector friend that unissued 1932 plates are not too uncommon because of the Great Depression, there weren't as many cars sold.

 

I missed this first time around. Please excuse a side story, not about plates, that I feel I must interject.

Around 1964 (my best guess) a good buddy of mine was driving his beater '57 Ford in Mt Prospect and had an altercation with one of those 'trikes'. He was waiting for heavy traffic to clear for a chance to make a left turn when he thought he saw a break in the flow and went for it. Well, it seems an officer was tucked in close, out of the line of sight, behind that vehicle (Let's not call it tailgating ) and my buddy, Benny, contacted and flipped the said officer and 'trike' while attempting to make a snappy turn before more traffic jammed up.
Have you ever poked a wasp nest? That pretty much describes the next 15 minutes. The officer was unhurt but embarrassed and pissed and a flock of his officer buddies showed up. They put their heads together and appointed themselves judge and jury on the spot. The verdict came in that it was all an understandable situation and dismissed the case with no tickets issued.
Your post makes me wonder, though, if you might be the owner of 'Exhibit A' from the trial?
