@redoxide got my imaginaton going on a hypothetical engine swap i've had going in my head for awhile now. Let's say you have a '40 Ford with no engine and you want to swap in a OHV engine and you have accsess to the same three engines. A first generation Hemi, an Olds rocket engine, and a Cadillac (331-390) which would you pick? Would you go with the Cad like @Moriarity has, would you go with a Olds Rocket like the Bob McCoy (The real Macoy) or would you go with the Hemi? I've also heard where a 302 Jimmy straight six was popular in these cars at one point too. and just for fun lets make it a poll too!

And just for fun I've created an (Other) category If you have any better ideas. (But don't say SBC because that's boring).

Looks like @Moriarity's posting the Ole Hoodless bunch of Cadillac Shininess is influencing the outcome...

That Cadillac motor looks like it belongs in that 40 engine bay.. Proportion, balance , fit, it just looks right .

  8. I like the olds 394 over the earlier Rockets and have actually stuff one in about one of everything when they were still available. They are a good looking mill and stout stock out of the box

Not at all @Paul . Thanks!

  12. While I wouldn't pick the jimmy either... I have seen this done in an old HotRod Magazine from the 50s..
So... it is traditional and very unique!

X2 - better have the ears checked if you thought you heard 302" GMCs were popular swaps into '40 Fords. That it happened once doesn't make it a good idea. FWIW, at a local show, I saw a '40 Packard with a '40s flathead Cadillac V8 swap. Another old gomer was looking at it as I walked up and he said, "I owned both those cars and the Packard was way better than the Cad."
Also X2 on the Cadillac 390"; other than the Packard V8, it's the best engine of the '50s available,

I do thing backasswards. I had already built the Hemi and then I went looking for something to put it in. A 41 Ford truck was the lucky contestant. Thus I vote Hemi for your ride. All of those choices are pretty cool though and I don't know who this moriarity fella is but that ford needs a Hemi too.

  17. Interesting there is no Ford power on your list- No Y-Block MEL or FE lovers? All fit the pre-65 criteria I didn’t see the poll- but was there a box to select for ‘Other’?

I'm hurt : Doesn't ANYONE like '56-'57 Lincoln 368" Y-Blocks anymore? I know they're not popular due to the lack of factory stick transmissions, but definite "Torque-Monsters", look good, especially with the Continental valve covers, & you don't have to worry about seeing another one at the same show.....

Probably the most traditional swaps were Olds and Cad. (the Nail Head Buick was in there also) They both dress equally as nice. Although the Olds is a little more work to install than the Cad I believe it was favored by many because it has a better oiling system than the Cad and was easier to find speed parts for as they were way more popular the racing world at the time. It was the first choice in top fuelers and held most all the National records before they figured out how to make the Chrysler Hemi work.

Alot of the gassers like Stone Woods& Cook also ran the the olds Rocket before "Big John Mazmanian" put a Hemi in his Willys. So, yes a lot more speed equipment and dress up goodies were avaliable for the Olds.

Years ago I recall a circle track racer here in SoCal (like the late 50s, early 60s) a Chevy sedan that ran really hard and gave the V-8s a bad time. For a very long time all the owner/driver would say is that it was a "special" flathead six. Yeah, we all know the GM stuff was overhead valve but I saw it...it was definitely a flathead six! It turns out that this guy had been running a Hudson flathead six in his Chevy...and the class rules at the time didn't forbid it. He just didn't inform anyone it was a Hudson.

  26. It is OK me and @Paul are the only two that would mention it and he bailed on me. LOL

Truth be known I had a 331 caddy in a '46 Ford coupe. I swapped in a Cleveland Hamster when the Caddy got tired. Went back to the caddy as soon as I gathered up the pieces and finished the machine work. I am just a motor monger  (that's like a whore monger only a little more moral) I just never met a motor I didn't like.:D
