Hot Rods Are louvers as popular today as they have been in the past?

I am slightly leaning on the other side of fence. I like the factory louvers on 1920's and 1930's hood sides. But the " cool factor" feeling has never hit me ever between the eyes. You want to drive it or continue cleaning out the dirt and bugs and dealing with rain . Rain spots in your valve covers ,frames and air cleaners so you can clean them again? And a little moisture/water on ignition system to top off. Sign me up

 

Don't throw wrenches or full beer cans this way ( unless I am in the mood to catch them, it is just me.

 

Let me add, that I do like blisters.

I never understood a louvered trunk, on a street driven car.

 

That guy trying to sneak in the drive in has to have air in that small trunk. HRP

 

I have 78 in the hood of my dad's 36 cabriolet and 90 in the hood of my 48 Austin Dorset. Both hoods were punched at the Cedar Rapids Swap Meet in the mid 1980s. A guy would come in with a louver press in the back of his pick-up. He would unload it and start punching louvers. I think he charged 25 cents a hole if I remember correctly. It was a manual press and he would line the die up and give it about 3 pulls on the handle. On the 4th pull you would here a big pop or bang and he would then move to the next louver. He had arms like Popeye. Eventually a local Cedar Rapids body shop bought the press and converted it to hydraulic. The press changed hands a couple of times and the last I knew it was somewhere in the Marshalltown Iowa area. And I like louvers as much today as I did when I had them punched.

 

No way are louvers as popular as they once were. Now I wouldn't even know where to get louvers punched. After hand sanding for paint a punched hood your fingers will tell you you've made a mistake.
Louvers are great for removing hot air from under the hood. Letting rain water in to drip on your engine is not for me.

 

Louvers are still cool, even to us kids (I’m 32)

I love everything about louvers except laying them out , punching them and SANDING them. Other than that I love them !! Bill

I vividly remember sanding the original louvers in my 32 side panels, they are the 25 Louver per side and doing the front and back that adds up to 100 louvers to sand, lots of sore & cut fingers but they sure look cool.

I may eventually have louvers in my hood tops but if I do I will use a aftermarket Rootlieb top. HRP

Maybe this is the press John Worden has? I don't know anyone else near here with a louver press.
