This information is probably too old for most, but some may find it interesting: The Stromberg Carburetor Customer List is as complete as I can make it. The following documents (or groups of documents) have been combined into one database: (A) Stromberg card file dated 1918 (supposedly, these were sent to distributors, but have located only one group of cards, incomplete) (B) Stromberg Sales and Service Manual dated 1920 - available to distributors (C) Stromberg Sales and Service Manual dated 1926 (D) Stromberg Sales and Service Manual dated 1929 (E) Stromberg Sales and Service Manual dated 1937 (F) Experimental Carburetor Index - began in 1929, believe I have the only original, as it was kept in the Office of the Chief Engineer (G) Code Index - best guess is this was begun in 1934, again, believe I have the only original, also from the Office of the Chief Engineer (H) Existing drawings and blueprints - not complete. At some point these were archived on 500 foot rolls of microfilm - no fun! Have been working at this project since roughly 1980. There are 11,307 individual records in the database. The first task was to enter each individual record into the database. Each was typed, scanning was not possible. At the time, typos were hopefully eliminated (and hopefully, new ones were not introduced). Sample: Grass-Premier was often spelled Gross-Premier. Next was to attempt to get a uniform name for each customer. Example: Mack Trucks were about equally listed as Mack and International Motors (parent company). This was a nightmare! But done to the best of my ability. Below is a copy of the index. Reference numbers 1 - 268 are original Stromberg code numbers. Reference numbers above 268 are numbers that I assigned to identify these companies. Sorry about the mis-aligned columns. Company reference number. Number 1-268 were assigned by Stromberg. Number 269 and higher assigned by me for companies for which Stromberg did not assign a number. Most Strombergs from 1935 up will have the reference (code) number as the prefix of the idenfication number stamped somewhere on the carburetor. Jon.
I started changing jets in the drag race car in 1954, and ever after that used Stromberg 81s, 97s on most of my engines, not to mention everybody else's, in duos, trios, and quartets for years. (yes, even sextets and octets) Then with the resurgence of hot rods in '68...even more, so Crimeny! Must have met a fair amount of them Strombergs then and now... LOL
Stromberg Carburetor and Stromberg-Carlson were totally different companies, although interestingly, both originated in Chicago. The Stromberg carburetor was originally called the Goldberg, but the name was changed early on due to "political correctness" (even in the early 1900's!). Somewhere, and don't ask me where, I have one of the early Goldberg carbs with Goldberg cast on the bowl cover. Jon.
A tremendous amount of work went into compiling this information. Thank you, CarbKing. If the earliest source material was 1918, Stromberg was still keeping records of defunct companies. I own a 1912 MICHIGAN automobile equipped with a Stromberg B No. 4 carburetor on a Buda engine. Michigan Motor Car Company (your reference #490) was bankrupt and out of business by late 1913 - early 1914. It was previously known as "Michigan Buggy Company" and was famous for carriages - which did not require carburetors, but did require hay for the power source.
Yup it started one wondering but what an impressive amount of work to put that together that I imagine happened over a good number of years and wasn't done in the last two weeks.
Zcraig - I have earlier Stromberg references, but those are included in the card file. Lots of original stuff was missing by the time I acquired the remains of the Stromberg files in approximately 1980. I show the Stromberg B-4 used on the 40 HP Michigan. As to the Michigan Buggy Company, it was not the intake that was the issue; rather it was the exhaust! And I did start entering information into my database in 1980; so it has been a long haul. Occasionally, I am able to add information from a customer with an early application and a factory parts book. At the same time, I started a project of digitizing the drawings (have shared a couple of those here). I doubt seriously if I live long enough to finish this project (unless I win the lottery and can have it done by a data conversion company). Stromberg was sufficiently far-sighted about 1940 to microfilm all then existing drawings. While this provided an archive, the microfilm is difficult to use, as the rolls are 500 foot (you can place approximately 7500 drawings on one roll)! Have spent a LOT of both time and money in the process of digitizing, and a long way from complete. In the for what its worth category, I am the current caretaker (no one actually owns anything!) of the existing Stromberg, Carter, and Kingston carburetor files. Jon.
I mentioned in an earlier post that somewhere I had one of the very earliest Strombergs, which was called a Goldberg.
