  2. Its a Chevy 235 cu. in. That casting number was used from '55 through '62. This one appears to be from 1960.

not easy to run the numbers on Canadian engines, because most of the documentation out there is for US engines. Cast Oct 14 1958 (if that last number is really an 8, it's hard to tell for sure, it might be a 9 or a 3 or a 0 or who knows)

Given that appears to be a Canadian built engine, it could be a 261, not a 235. The cylinder bore is the difference. According to numerous posts on the subject, Canadian built Pontiacs were built on Chevrolet based bodies/chassis, including the running gear. Six cylinder models of that era were equipped with 261 engines. However, that said, it may well be a 235 if it came from a Chevrolet in the first place.

Thanks guys. I wanting to build a in-line 6 for my drag only Henry J and already purchased a 74 292 from a 75 C10 but when I seen this I couldn’t resist especially with the original Offenhouser stuff on it. Seller said guy had it some sort of roundy round car and it’s evident it was raced as has an external oil lines out of the pan, fuel block off and heavier valve springs in it. The block looks much beefier in this than the 74 292 I got. Which one am I better off building up as a race motor?? I am going to push it as I am after 400 hp!

  6. It’s a nice engine
The Canadian ponchos where just fancy chevies

They came with 261 engines with steel timing gears and bypass oil filter
    Hydraulic lifters

If your engine has been hoped up might have been changed to solid lifter and full flow oiling

Look for the capitans bars on top of the starter and under the intake to confirm

    There and there !

    Adjustable rockers came from factory
Not to say your engine does not have a cam or valve work.

I don’t remember the name, I have the book it’s yellow and it’s a how to hip up your Chevy 6 hot rod book by a known builder in the 50-60’s
Gives all the little tricks etc.

It’s still in print , bought mine 10 or so years ago from indigo

As far as stout the 292 is going to be times over stouter block wise than a 235/261. 4 main bearings in the early engine apposed to the 7 in the 291.

Vintage gasser at lets say Hamb friendly events. It's just as much about having a cool engine and having fun as it is going fast. I saw that at the Billetproof drags. The guys who seemed to have the most fun actually had milder engines that didn't take any prep before making another round. As long as you are running against a pretty well equal car it doesn't much matter or at least it didn't appear to.
To me though the 292 makes more sense as all the V8 stuff except flywheel bolt on the back of the 292. Scatter shield, no problem any V8 Chev bellhousing for a 168 tooth flywheel will work.

    Times 2 with @Mr48chev ......post #11

It just depends on what category you want to race in.

If 400hp is the number required the 235 is not the engine to get there, California Bill's book shows dyno numbers on a 235 equipped with Howard SU-9A cam, Nicson triple sidedraft manifold, 8.5:1 CR, Methanol Fuel =175 hp, on 20% Nitro-Methane+ 10% tap water = 195hp...Roger Huntington book has a 248 full Wayne 12 port conversion, 10.5 compression, triple carbs = 180 hp approx.@ 5200 rpm, same setup on pure methanol= 205 rpm @ 5000 rpms.
I don't know if a 292 will get you your 400 number, but much closer and far, far cheaper because of the SBC parts interchange... sounds like a great project, best of luck, dyno dave

I have both. They are different books, but 90% overlap in content.
I think all engines with captain's bars were 261s, but not all 261 had captain's bars. The only way to know for sure is to run the numbers. If you're having trouble with Canadian numbers, check with ChevyTalk or Inliners.org.

Has anybody had problems keeping flywheel bolts tight at high tons while racing these 292's ?
