    Hello,

This style of convertible hardtop car was a favorite of my mom, when they first came out in 1957 fall season. It was a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner. I do not know what it is for girls and women to gravitate to convertibles, but when our dad was in the market for his next Buick sedan, we stopped at a Ford Dealer. Luckily, the Ford Dealer had one of the largest display window and she saw red/white convertible in the showroom.

Despite being a Ford and not a Buick, my dad stopped and we all got our to see what my mom was so excited in seeing. At the Buick dealer, he had already given reasons for no on the Skylark convertible in 1953, but there was a long 1957 convertible on the floor. My mom liked that one, but my dad nixed it with a slew of convertible this and convertible that, general information. So, we left liking the Ford, but no purchase this time.

It was a hardtop Ford that disappeared into the trunk area to make itself into a convertible. A two in one car. Now, there could be no more bad mouthing convertibles, because of the hardtop cover.

Despite how nice the Ford looked and functioned, a few days later, our dad drove home in a new blue, two door 1957 Buick Roadmaster. So much for choices…

This 58 Ford Skyliner has been all over So Cal, attending almost every hot rod “gathering of the tribes” events, recently. It was made for cruising and the mild So Cal weather. Top down, top up, it was a hard top convertible, and a good one at that.

Custom, Custom 300, Ranchero and station wagons were 116' wheelbase. Fairlane's and all the rest were 118' wheelbase.
