When taking pics of cars, rotating your phone produces more car and less background.

  4. Blake, you are so correct with your statement.

  5. It's an uphill battle. So many don't get it. it seems most You Tube videos are shot in portrait mode. If people will begin using landscape mode there's hope that They will stop calling wheels "rims".

...To put that another way your top image is this...

...and your bottom image is this...

There really is no rules in pics it is truly yours to discover so I use a mix and I have to ask did you crop your pics as they did not fill the viewing area but you may have used a Tablet...your message is the same regardless however Landscape you can get more vehicle less background...

In the landscape mode I enlarged the image on the screen using two fingers, standing in the same location, which prevented having to get closer to the car which would have distorted the image.

I’m thinking that you’re probably just looking for excuses to post pictures of your car ;):D:D

Not that there’s anything wrong with that :D

16C2BA56-E87E-44D6-8942-4D75EA5246C3.jpeg Taking good pictures of cars is harder than you might think. Besides holding the phone correctly you need to pay attention to the lighting, shadows, background, etc... Digital photography is great though, you can shoot a bunch of pictures and odds are at least one of them will look good.

all positive ideas listed above are good ones - but, when trying to take pics at a car show, etc may not have the option to find a clear unobstructed view, like when people walk between you and whatever you are trying to shoot -when I am walking through a car gathering I do not always have the time to wait for the perfect angle - people like Dan Greenberg have it all figured out really good - my motto is to take a lot of pics with phone & regular camera and maybe end up with some that might be considered good.

Tall and narrow: portrait mode. Short and wide: landscape mode!

I have a couple other photos complaints.

    1. Ultra close ups. Why do people place the camera so close to the car? When I look at a car I don't stick my face 6" away from the car surface. Back up when taking a photos and get the whole car (unless you want to show a specific detail like a carb or something). I realize it can be difficult to get a good shot at a car show with tons of people around but I find that if you stand back with a camera in your hand most people will see that you are trying to get a shot and move out of your way.

    2. Camera too low. Why do people place the camera on the ground or way down low? Again, I don't lay on my belly when I look at a car. Take the shot from normal eye level. Unless you're a midget. Then hold the camera over your head! (apologies to all the "little people" :p

Is that your other Chevy Coupe Project? It's a Six with a Honeycomb Rad so it looks to be 32ish

  18. It's ironic how all the modern gangsters hold their pistols sideways, but can't hold their cell phones sideways to shoot any decent videos.

  20. I want to take this a step further, rotate any camera (SLR/DSLR?MIRRORLESS/POINT & SHOOT). I came to this realization back in the seventies. One of the guys on a rod run had the perfect hot rod, black '32 Ford roadster, Buick powered, channeled with flames. I managed to get the car off to the side on a grassy hill and shot several photos. The guy that owned the car worked for a national magazine. When he showed the photos to the editor the comment was "if the photos were in a vertical format they would be on the magazine cover". Unfortunately, it was the most uncomfortable car I have ever ridden in.

for videos, yes, I see no reason for vertical. But for photography, if your photography is more than just documenting a build or something, often times vertical photos offer good composition. Maybe not for images on the web, since monitors are horizontal. but for prints, vertical is just fine if the composition works.

every magazine cover is vertical. ;-)

“Rule of thirds” will make all the difference in the world regardless of vertical or horizontal.

Second , if you’re taking a photo of someone’s face back up and zoom in , no one looks good with a wide angle nose .

Why not just use “Edit” to crop and to adjust exposure? i find with my iPhone X I need to lighten up nearly all photos and for pics of cars in particular I edit out excess pavement or sky.

In landscape mode you can get a larger still croppable version with higher resolution which is better for editing...
