Hot Rods Blower case color?

What is your opinion as to the color of my blower case.
I am planning on going with case painted Hemi orange,,,the ribs polished,,,the bearing plates polished and the front cover polished.
Or,,,I might just paint the case back to wrinkle black,and polish the plates?
Not sure yet,,,any ideas?
I plan on putting this on my Desoto in the future.

 

I am going to go with a unfinished/raw look with a Satan clear to protect it

 

If you paint the indented part I would think it would look best what ever color you decide to paint the engine block. HRP

 

Yeah,,that is what I am leaning towards.
I plan to paint the engine Hemi orange.
So the low part of the case would be that color,,,and the ribs and plates polished.
Would that be too bright!,,,,hurt the eyes !,,Lol?
I am open to any ideas,,,within reason!

A painted blower is for model cars...well, not not even there.

Before this is all over you will hear many times "it's yours, do what you want".
Sounds like you want us to decide for you so...................
Myself, I like the natural aluminum look (NO CLEAR COAT).
Pay no mind to the "but it will show gas stains" crowd, it's a supercharger on a hot rod.
No excuses needed.

 

Okay,,,just plain aluminum is better?
I don’t have a problem with that,,,,,I am looking for all the ideas I can get!
People that have been around this for a while know better than me.
But,,,I wonder about wrinkle black too?
If I go aluminum,,I won’t use clear over it though.

I also saw one some time ago that was wrinkle Red,,,I didn’t know it was available ! What about wrinkle Orange,,,Lol ?

Raw aluminum color, smooth out any roughness a bit but no polishing.

Satan clear would be devilish.

 

What he said, was "SATAN" as in Lucifer. Pretty sure it would look good in "SATIN" clear.

 

Have it blasted with bird shot and satin clear coat.....

 

I’m not really worried about gas stains too much.
Don’t plan on using a carb really,,,I have a different plan.

Would a Shotgun be too much for it?
Mechanical injection,,,not electronic,,,,working on the plan now.
I know mechanical is testy on the street,,but when over a blower,,it helps even it out quite a bit.

The finish on your blower will be the least of your problems.

 

Polished ribs have been cool almost forever. The rest is up to you. It's your car but why would you want orange on an early engine?

I feel a headache coming on....

 

I bought my dad a fully polished 6-71 blower, off of a jet boat. Sent it to Gary Dyers for an overhaul.

We got it back, and my dad taped off the ribs, to have the case shot blasted. Damn, did it look good. Polished ribs & end caps, satin case.

 

As cast 671 main case, polished front and rear bearing housings, the rear cover, front housing and Enderle bugcatcher were wrinkle finish.

 

The original GMC green color. Patina.

This is from Bakersfield smokers meet 1965. Car is burgandy, engine accents between fins and ribs are also burgandy so some did do it even back in the day.

PS, still looking for one of these Mallory Mini-mag coils (the red bracket on the side of the blower)

 

I’ve always been an “as cast” blower guy, but I picked up a rebuilt 6-71 that has a REALLY tough black paint or coating on it so that’s gonna stay. I’d like to knock down the fins on the blower case to regular aluminum and run finned aluminum valve covers painted black with polished fins as well. Kinda one of those situations where the parts I’ve collected direct the end look.

That is the style I am talking about.
I am probably going to go with black on the engine anyway.
Then I could keep the engine combo looking clean .
Keep the pics coming of old rides,,, I have a lot of interest in the old stuff.

The Mopar orange engine color didn't exist until the '62 Max Wedge cars, and it wouldn't be called "Hemi Orange" until the 426 Race Hemi debuted in 1964.

From '51-'58, every Dodge / Desoto / Chrysler Hemi engine left the factory painted a bright silver (with 300s getting gold valve covers, and some D500 and oddball D501 Dodges getting red valve covers).

Personally I like as-cast blower cases. Kinda has that serious race car look. Nothing wrong with polished or painted cases though. Maybe find some examples of engines that look good to you and duplicate that. The hard part is going to be finding a blower manifold for that low deck Desoto.

Mine is raw finish and unpainted....

 

I would look at the whole build. It has to match the rest of the car. Most times less is more.
I run a polished case it matches the rest of my car that's also polished and plated so it doesn't look out of place.
A blower makes a big statement without needing to draw additional attention to it.

It was traditional to leave the 671 blower the aluminum color as much as possible. If it was an old used one, maybe a sand blast finish before thoroughly rebuilding the whole thing to racing specs. We were lucky, when we visited a diesel engine showroom in nearby Wilmington,CA. Our luck was that the used supply of 671 blowers was plentiful, but they were in “not so good” shape. Thousands of miles of diesel truck usage or from the huge boats in the nearby harbor.

But, as luck would have it, the sales guy said that if we wanted the showroom display model, he would make us a great deal on the price. He had to get a new one for his newest diesel motor display, anyway and he did not know what to do with the old/new one sitting on the motor. He could not sell it as new. So, we walked out of the place with a “newish” 671 blower. (never been used)

Immediately we took it over to Reath Automotive and they wanted to tear it apart and rebuild the “new” blower for racing. That was the way to go. As far as the outside, it was to be the aluminum color, as 99.9% of them were raced that way. Maybe the only shiny things for us, were the new nuts for the hold downs.

It was one thing to have a Willys Gas Coupe sitting in the pits, but when we raised the hood and make our adjustments during the initial fire up, a large crowd gathered to see what was making that powerful sound. To us, the simple racing look of the aluminum without any other add ons made the 671 SBC look as good as the sound and power.

 

Now, that's a beautiful piece of work!......
