Well gents, I have had this Quick Change housing hanging on the wall in my shop for nearly 10 years now. It is a little bit of a stumper, as no one seems to know to assembly it. It's a quick change, How complicated could it be. Let me start, I am not new to quick changes, I have one under my 34. It is a Rodsville build up with 36 internals and bells. built by Andy Kohler. So back story, Andy and I were at Detroit Autorama and Andy spots this QC and I buy it, everything is great until a few months later when we try to put it together. Well you look at it and maybe you can see the issues. It is built by Levi Jones, magnesium, never assembled or used. Apparently there is a reason it was never put together. Looks like a normal QC, rear cover is nice, bearing support no damage, no damaged threads, what's the problem? so what exactly is the problem, ring gear does not fit in the case!!! HUH, What the hell. that is a standard 4:11 ring gear. It clearly does not fit. So, anyone have any ideas on putting this monster together?
So, Folks what we are looking at seems to be an oddity. It is clearly a Quick Change and I am glad to own it. Everything points that this is a V8 case until you try to put it together with V8 parts. So if it is not a V8 then it must be a Model A based. But, hold on. There is no pinion support on Model A rear differentials. So, anyone have any ideas. Looking for the HAMB's brightest and best Quick Change guys to provide me with some insight here.
Find out what diameter the ring gear is for the 3.54 ratio. It might fit. Speedway Motors Winters Howe Racing Frankland Racing Supply Mike
I recall a Midget v8-60 race car with: English Ford front axle & spindles, hubs. (Anglia?) 'Smallish' quick change, my two friends and I remarked how 'cute' the miniature Ford parts were...'Way back, around '54 or '55... I'm diggin', right here...
Is it possible to cut down the V8 ring gear and carrier to fit inside, then use V8 Pinion, with Model A Axle tubes? Questions What is the OD of the model A Inner bearing races? Can V8 carrier bearings fit in a Model A housings?
Levy Jones had a shop in Puyallup, Wa. in the 60's and made replicas of just about any race car part there was. I worked for him one winter building rear ends for Penske Racing. After he moved back east, I lost track of him. That center section is likely for a midget and came with side plates for an open tube axle. I don't remember what gears it used. Most all of his parts were direct copies of the part and would interchange with originals and some other brands.
I too think Model A. But, what about the pinion nose bearing? Something in the back of my head says that I've seen that combination, but I'm not sure what or where it was. I'll look through my files and see what I can come up with. If the V8 pinion will fit, cutting the ring gear down might be an alternative. It looks shorter than a Halibrand V8 case. How long is the lower shaft? Too bad Levy is no longer with us.
Well that shoots part of my theory all to hell. I have a Halibrand V8 lower shaft , which is 18 1/4" long. A Halibrand V8/Midget is 17 5/16" So yours wouldn't fit either of those two. The mystery is still the R&P.
I am saying its midget as the bells dont fit v8 bells or model A but its close. I bought one similar at the swap and was told it was model A. I knew it wasn’t model a and figured V8 ,it was neither . The opening is 8.5 inches and it came with a ring as the pinion is installed and shaft length is 15 inches. Mine is a winters but has the same dimensions as yours
This Jones quick change uses all Model A components. The lower shaft is the right length for an A QC. The nut that holds the pinion shaft in the pinion gear is made from a hex bar that was internally threaded and turned down on the end to register in the support bearing. It was probably made for a spool so putting a differential in will require clearance machining. Being 3 5/16" wide is a bit concerning though as a stock Model A is 3 1/2" wide. You should be able to work around that.
Winters next to a Jones quickchange with 15 inch shaft , the Jones qc has bolt pattern for model a bells
So, I called HRW and they have the parts I need to assemble. Nick at HRW said he has assembled on of these recently and it worked out OK. Sounds like the bulk of this problem is doable. Just need to disassemble some axles and figure out if I am going to use "A" style 32 axle I have laying around or just a plain old A axle. Gonna have to save up for some parts from HRW. gonna need a few parts and maybe one of these
