  4. This is a rendering that I did of a concept I came up with for a full custom build. I like the smooth look and flow. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get it built.:D

We all like a nice front end…but what is it?

    Hello,

Despite what some websites have posted, this green version of Norm Cowdrey’s radical, Chevy powered, Austin Healy ran well in the M/SP class at the drags. It was not just the Green color paint, but the way it was set up to race. The drawing was from a racoon’s eye view of what is coming at you at the drags. It was a rumble coming out of the jungle…

Having driven around in an old 1960 Austin Healy in college, I can testify that it is not for the meek. This girl lived in our apartment complex and was a very cool person. To me, she was the epitome of a So Cal girl, blond, tall, nice figure, and smart. She knew I liked surfing, sports cars, motorcycles and hot rods. So, she asked if we could drive to Santa Cruz from San Jose to spend the day at the beach. What??? I was floored… (Let me add in, she was also, BOLD…)

She had an ulterior motive…(I wish…) She wanted me to check out an older 1960 Austin Healy Convertible that she saw in the local paper. But, first, she wanted to spend the day at the beach. The waves were pumping at Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz. I was out in the water for hours having some great rides through the sea weed. On the way home after a tiring day, she drove my 1965 red, El Camino home. When we got back to the apartments, she had decided to buy the Austin Healy.

Now, the next few days was a challenge as she drove the Austin Healy back to the apartment complex and wanted to take me for a drive. She was having the best days of her life, the wind blowing her long hair out the back, smiling and clanging those shifts through each gear. She was so anxious in driving, that she kept letting out the clutch before she finished moving the gear selector to 2nd or 3rd. (a newbie) When I told her to keep the clutch all the way in until the shift was complete, then it sounded and felt better.

We lived closed enough to walk to the college campus, but, she drove her sporty car everyday. As we were driving around the back country roads of San Jose (yes, there were nice, empty, country roads in San Jose long before the Silicon Valley got developed…) she started to go faster and took corners much better. But, it was a low slung, open sports car and a “newbie” 20 something girl just getting used to the flash and speed. So, to me it was a scary proposition riding around with her. She still wanted me to go with her “around the neighborhood” until she got better.

How does this 1965 Austin Healy episode compare with the Norm Cowdrey Austin Healy? If a stock Austin Healy scared the $#!& out of me, accelerating and rounding corners, just think of what 500 extra, 671 supercharged horsepower, in this lightweight sports car would feel like at full throttle? YOWZA !!! No wonder the race car was fast and it won a lot of races in So Cal.

Blurred vision or at least a hindered view of the world…??? In San Jose/Santa Cruz, she was “blinding” enough, let alone with 500 extra horsepower at a moment’s notice. A nice memory, during the good old college days, gone forever. But, it was nice to pinpoint one of the highlights of being away at college, far, far from home.
