Technical What am I looking at?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Aug 19, 2019.

  1. These two cars, I assume they are 49 Ford coupes but with Mercury grilles and badging are from a post by potatotruck and the show is in British Columbia but I have never seen anything like them, there is also a convertible with the same grille and badging.

Is this just a few guys thinking the same are were these offered from the factory, I know I have never seen them here in the States. HRP

    1949 Meteor.
    Same body as Ford.
    The hood is different.
It has a bit of a downward curve on the lower lip.
It will not work on a Ford.
Look for '51 Meteor, they have a nice grill.

You should expand your horizons a little bit Danny and attend some Canadian summer car events.
You will see plenty of great things.

Carnut has several pictures of CDN Meteors

  8. A friend here in town, built a Meteor custom, re-arranged the letters on the hood to read EETMOR. That got some quizzical looks as well.

I thought the same thing, thought someone put together a very nicely done mild custom!

There was one at a small outdoor show back in the '60s. Owner was visiting a local rodder, brought the Meteor for all to see.
First one I'd ever seen, (Santa Clara, CA) the 'Meteor' letters were molded off, and the grille had one of those cool J.C.Whitney center pieces (5 vertical bars V'd in center) that did away with the center 'bumber guard'?
I was explaining to a bud the work on the lower hoodline, and the trim that surrounded the Merc grille.
The car's owner was 'kind', and walked forward a couple of steps, "Ahem..." and gently explained my error... 'Well...How'd I know?'
I stood 'corrected'. Sure was a Honey of a Shoebox!

I too have never seen one in the steel or in a picture before today, the top picture on steels without a visor looks fantastic.

They go along with mercury Pickup, Pontiac Acadian and other models sold in Canada. Do a search on these models too Danny. Those of us who live up north are more likely to see them than you guys down south

I heard a comedian once saying that Canada is like America's attic. You kinda forget it's up there but when you do check it out you realize that there's some pretty cool crap up there!

The dash is the same as Ford.
    The horn ring is Meteor.
The trunk lid has a shooting star thing as in Meteor.
1949 was the first year for them.
Later years had different side chrome, etc.
I think Bill Hines did a sectioned Ford with a '51 Meteor grill.

The Larry Ernst Chevy hardtop that Barris did back in the early Fifties had a '51 Meteor grille. Bill Neuman's '60 Ford found in 1963 era Rod & Custom had a '60 Meteor grille. There is also the matter of Ford Monarchs which were Mercs sold at the Ford dealerships.

The history of the Meteor is rather interesting. Because Canada is really wide open country the Ford dealers sold the Fords and also slightly badge engineered Mercury to satisfy the need for a more upscale car. The Mercury dealers sold the Mercurys along with a badge engineered Ford called the Meteor for the need of a slightly cheaper car. Smaller markets could not support both a Ford and a Mercury dealer so nessesity gave us this. The Mercury sold at the Ford dealerships was the Montcalm I believe but I could very well be wrong on that name. One day my '56 Meteor Rideau Victoria will roll again!

I remember seeing a "Mercury" pickup 63-64 style when stationed in Puerto Rico, I wanted to take it back to the states so bad!

I was aware of the Meteor, but had never seen one. The grille is awesome!

  24. I am familiar with the 1954 Mercury Meteor, where as the body looks like the American '54 Ford but the grille and badging is different.

But looking further I see that there is a Meteor Rideau also, that is also a new one on me.

Is that a trim level? HRP

  25. Thanks for the history lesson. HRP

You all should check out the grille and side stainless on a '56 Meteor Rideau if you want to see cool...
