Technical Manual transmissions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Aug 18, 2019.

  1. Before you can drive your car or truck down the highway you will need a transmission, then a decision has to be made and for this thread lets say you want a straight drive, the options are the traditional 3 speed transmission, ether column or floor shift, then there's the old top loaders & rock crusher 4 speeds then the later model transmissions like the T-5's.

Do you have a manual transmission in your current ride?

If you were planning to use a manual transmission in a future build which one would you use? HRP

39 Ford case with the 46 48 gears behind a 49 Merc with a 37 3:78 rear end. It's till being built but I suspect it will be just what I am looking for in my 31 roadster.

Although not “traditional” I like the t5.
Easy to source, compact and the overdrive allows you to run lots of rest gear.

I have two cars with t5’s

  5. I have a top loader 4 speed in my '65 Ford pickup project and a T-5 transmission in the Ranch Wagon. HRP

Autogear Super 22. Like a Rock Crusher, only stronger.
This transmission has the lower 1st gear, 2.56 : 1 vs. what was factory available in the M22, 2.20 : 1

I like them all .:) Even the stock GM truck 4 speeds. I have a couple of Saginaw 4 speeds, and a Mopar 4 speed but hoping a certain someone finds the M 22 in the parts stash.

Many hot rods and a '47 sedan on hold: It will have its original column shift 3 speed, behind 454 (gift engine)
Preference is my '37 LaSalle, behind 354 Hemi...
Also have a second '37 LaSalle behind my 276 DeSoto Hemi.
These packages were fitted to my '27 Hiboy roadster and '27 T Touring, respectively.
But sidetracked with a nice '48 59AB temporarily for my tub, ('39 box) and 283 SBC for the roadster, also a '39 box/'48 gears.
My '54 Ford coupe gets the new, fresh 406, with the top loader 3 speed (close ratio) and Jeep floorshift tower, (REAL floor shift!) I also have a World Class late Mustang T5 to go in the '54 if I want the overdrive later...but for now, the 'real floorshift' is good, plus: It has an all-synchro set, including low gear...

'55 F100 has the 350 Vortek with 350 T.H. (ironic to do this to a truck! But it was 1972, and I had been gifted the Chevy stuff...I needed a shop truck)
'53 Ford swing pedal bracket has the long shaft, (clutch pedal is in the cabinet with the clutch bellcrank ('Z-bar') and hardware, I had a Muncie M21 in it, but I also had a 350 T.H., and a driveshaft already...(Chev Monte Carlo, correct length, and 'U' joint bolted up to my (then) new 9" rear.
Muncie was a Buick unit, rigid yoke (no 'slip') so required a slip in the driveline. ($$)
My bud 'Bonneville Butch' gave me a '37 LaSalle to use in the truck, but it got fitted to my DeSoto mill.
Everything 'tentatively planned', slowly getting fitted into place...some things can change...

Every car I've built in the last 50 plus years has had a clutch. '32 Roadster '39 box w/25 tooth gear set and a Columbia 2-speed. '32 3W Muncie M-20 and 3.42 Olds rear gear. '55 Delray Richmond 5-speed and 3.08 gears. I've always enjoyed a standard transmission and as long as the knees hold up that's what I'll drive.

X's 2 on the Super 22! I have one in my '56 and absolutely love it! A little pricey but you get what you pay for. Definitely wouldn't be afraid to have another one. They can take a beatin'!

Although I do like AOD type automatics, & I have a t-5 in a truck, one of my old favorites is the t-85 OD for a cruiser, as I can use a lower final gear around town, but have the OD for the highway. Also lets me keep a "3-on-the-tree" for a clean floor, especially nice in a smaller vehicle.

T-5 in my sedan. Wish I would have put an auto in it though. My wife can drive a stick with no problem but she refuses to drive it.

My wife's DD is a 5 speed O.T. BMW. She drives my F100 sometimes, always rags on the automatic trans..."Trucks NEED stick shifts..." I just say, Yes, Dear.

  18. I’ve always been a fan of a manual trans in any performance car. Hell even old work trucks! Currently I have a 4 spd in one, a TKO 600 5spd to go in another and a third set up for a manual most likely another 5spd. But both of my trucks are automatics.

    T-5 in my current project.

I actually caught some grief from my shopping partners at the swap meet this last weekend as I looked over yet another cheap T-5. I have bought four to put on the shelf, ranging from free-fitty to $75. I may have an affliction.

I like both automatic and manual shift, depending on the engine and vehicle. My first significant (to me) swap was in '62 and I put a '55 Dodge 270 Hemi in my '53 Plymouth ragtop with a stock Mopar manual trans. A few years later, a '40 Chevy Coupe with 265 and iron PG and rear end from a donor '56 Chevy. I was poor and that's what I had.

Starting in 1970, I got into OT Japanese pickups. Built a series of four of them between '70 and '80. All with V6 Buicks, the first was stick, a bit later converted to an ST300, and the last three were all TH350. Rebuilt a '46 Jeep CJ2A with Buick V6 and OE BW T-90.

Currently working on '37 Chevy coupe with 6 cyl 235, soon to be mildly built 250 6, and have been preparing it for a T5.....but wavering on an automatic (TH350 or TH2004R). My '38 Buick, if I keep it a straight Eight, will use an AX-15 (Dakota) 5 spd adapted to a '53 263 via combination of Novak & Bendtsen's adapters. Should I change my mind and use a Buick 340 V8, then a TH2004R. My shop shelves are full of 'options'

    So, for me, it 'depends'.......

Speaking of this trans. My self if I were to do O.D. I'd use the later A833 (3.09 1.67 1.00 0.73) before going with anything with 5 or 6 forward gears. I say this because the way I drive my car these day's. A tight ratio isn't required and I like a shifter that bolts to the side of trans.

  24. Both tri fives have 4 speeds. Taboo has a M20 Muncie with an old Indy Shifter while the 55 has a T-10 with good old spaghetti linkage out of a 58 impala. The 33 ford pickup has a th350 in it. My two O/T Chevy's (68 Camaro and 68 C10) are also both factory 4 speed rigs and still have their 3 pedals.

That's what my '56 Dodge PU will be getting. Mine came from a van, so it has the forward shifter mount, should be bout right for the pickup seat placement.
Overdrive, strong enough for a hemi/big block and keeps it Mopar.

Currently have two 4 speed cars.

Muncie M-20 for our 67 Nova.

Richmond Super T-10 for my roadster.
    20180507_083849.jpg

Learned to drive in my brothers 64 Chevy pickup, compound 4 speed.
First car at 15, 61 Impala had a three speed/column, immediately put a Hurst Syncro-Loc shifter in it.
I've always been a 4 speed guy though.
57 Belair, second car in high school had two different T-10's.
Next, 65 ElCamino factory Muncie 4 speed.
65 Malibu bracket racer, Super T-10 (GM).
64 Impala, three speed/column, converted to Muncie 4 speed.
67 Nova, three speed/column, converted to Muncie 4 speed.

I have and require all my cars to have OD. I pulled a perfectly good TH350 out of my 57 and put in a 700R4 because of the excessive rpms it turned at highway speeds. I put a 5 speed AX-15 in my Plymouth. So, OD for me.

I took the Muncie out of my 55 last winter and put in a TKO600. It has made the car a lot more enjoyable for me to drive around. I like the first gear if the TKO just as much as the overdrive. My Muncie had the high first gear and the overall drive reduction just wasn’t enough in my opinion.
